rust on rotors

Anyone have any good ideas on cleaning rust stains off the hub portion of the rotors? I thought about masking and painting, but I wondered if there was anything I can use to just clean them up that will not hurt the rotor surface??

I just hate seeing that rusty stain through the wheels...

thanks

Just wire brush the rust off, hose it down with brake parts cleaner, mask then paint. You won't hurt the rotor surface.

Here's a real easy solution and only takes 1 minute. This is what I did and haven't seen rust for 4 years. I used a rust converter.

1. Get a metal brush and brush the rust off. Not important you get ALL it off.
2. Brush on a rust converter.
3. Wipe off excess.

It convert the rusts into a black coating which so far lasted 4 years.

is this like the prep you put on bare sheet-metal before priming?

Don't think so. This stuff is meant to go over rust and convert it to a hard surface that can be primed and painted. I'll try to look for the bottle tomorrow. But I think it is just phosphoric acid.

No. Spray can, in the paint section at your auto parts store.

Loctite makes a version of it. It's available at Home depot or auto stores. sometimes a spray, or in a liquid. It's a latex solution with some kind of chemical that turns the iron oxide rust into a black something else. I've used it on floor pans, metal roofs, and many things for a few years. The great thing about is there is little prep, just get off most of the rust. It doesn't usually stand up to alot of water, I would guess because the latex isn't fully waterproof. It can also be coated with another paint once it dries.

I paint mine with a cold galvanizing high temp gray paint. Made by LPS available at local Ace Hardware. Worked great on brake rotor hats and exhaust systems.

Can't find the bottle, but I'm sure it was a rust converter in a white milky liquid. I just brush it on.

Here's a pic of the rotor after close to 4 years, and NOT doing anything. Guess I could use a second application huh? Good part is that the rotor hub doesn't look painted.

I used that stuff about 20 years ago to coat the roof of a 1971 Camaro that looked like swiss cheese

epoxy primer and Imron coated it worked out great

never a bubble or any trace the roof was screwed up

i'll get some more for my rotors

thx all
