Inter 18.4 Volts on VR//How to replace?
Hello all, thanks again for all the help here. Looks like my jumping Tach on my 86 930 will in fact be the VR. Took it for a spin with a volt meter plugged into the cig lighter and low and behold, after 20 min things starting jumping like crazy and the meter was at 17.2-18.4.. Guess this can cause a few electrical problems..lol
What other problems might this cause? My other question is where the heck is the VR? I still have not rec my books so I am kinda going at this a little blind. So if anyone can give me a step by step or some kind of documentaion that would be appreciated! Its a 1986 911 Turbo. I will presume its behind the fan blades.. (never easy) lol ] Richard 86 930 "Julie" |

Richard,
The book is excellent and needs to be in any 911 owners library. That said, to give you an idea of what you are needing to do, take a look at this: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_alt_replace/911_alt_replace.htm I have never worked on a 930 but assume (know what that means) that its not much different from a normal 911. Takes an hour or so to get the old one out, same to put it back in, with normal working tools IF you have a fan belt/pulley wrench that came with the factory tool kit. Not real difficult and pls while you have the puppy apart, overhaul your alternator. Most local shops can do it and mine cost less than $75. Its cheap insurance. My regulator (internal) was going to 16 volts from time to time like yours. JA |
Hello
General rule in Automotive use it that the battery has only a limitet voltage operation level also electroniics can freak out if they get overcharged. So if VR is the Voltageregulator you are on the right path as everything abouve 14.5 Volt is bad for your battery. The voltage regulator is in the alternator and that unit sits behind the fanblade. Browse Pelicans tech archives and you will see how to get there. Grüsse |
It "might" be a bad connection (soldering joint) on the voltage regulator. Easy to see, easy to fix (if it was an external unit)
