Hi beam question

I did a search on this and I think I got it right but I want to double check because the info was on a few different year cars.
I have an 83SC and just got done a top end. During breakin I fried the alterantor. It was night time when it went and I was driving on lit highway I was trying to setermine if my lights were on or not and I hit the hi beams minutes before the car gave out (I know it wasn't what fried the alt or at least I don;t think it was). Anyway, I replaced the alt the next day and that night I noticed my hi beams were on. I flicked the switch and nothing, no change, no lo beams. Did I read correctly that the "sensor" or tab is in the wiper switch? Or that replacing the turnsignal switch will not fix this and that it's the wiper switch? Either switch is around $150 from our host and there is a used wiper switch for sale right now in the classifieds I'd like to pick up but I want to make sure I got this straight first. Thanks,

your high low is on your turn arm, if you search there is a thread on how to test and fix if it wasn't fried to bad, you should look into installing a set of head light relays to save yourself from running into this in the future. the set up the factory used runs the power thru the switch, with the relay you will still run 12v but the amperage will be significantly lower.

Thanks. I caught that thread in my search but I swear it said the "fix" was in the wiper switch. It even stated they thought it was funny that it was there and the parts search gave him a wiper switch pp#.
I plan on both - relays and trying to fix it first, was just gathering info and the part listed in PP classifieds was 1/3 the price of new.

mickey356,

there's a thread on repairing your existing stalk somewhere in this BBS...might take a bit of time to track it down, tho.

Basically, it comes down to bending the contacts in the turn signal stalk and doing some cleaning. Once you pull the stalk and operate it manually, you will understand...it's a very basic procedure. FWIW, I went ahead and purchased a new stalk just for peace of mind. Solved all of my problems with high and low beams as well as fog lamps.

Thanks Kidrock,
I have the thread saved. I'm gonna try to save the old one first and put relay in ( I'm saving my paypal $ for a new shifter ) but if it's cooked it's cooked and I'll replace it.
