Engine Drop?
Hi all,
Yesterday I got everything removed to drop my engine (3.0 SC 1982 Euro) prior to re-build. I am trying to get it out without removing the transmission but an struggling to get it out. I have a hoist overhead supporting the motor and a hydrualic jack below and still cannot get the motor to separate from the transmission. I thought it was possible but I phoned my mechanic who did my clutch recently and he said I must drop both transmission and engine together?? Any help would be appreciated. |
They can be removed independently. You need to disconnect the clutch fork from the transmission to separate the two.
This may help you-http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/314108-1st-drop-not-going-so-well.html |

This may help you-The link won't post correctly. Sorry. Just do a search with the words "engine, drop, separate" and you will find great info on the process. I find it easier to drop both but others find the opposite to be true for them. Good luck. |
First off thanks to Wayne (Oh haha) for the information. After re-reading the literature and the link you sent I got into it. Took about an hour and the beast was on the trolley. So now I can proudly say I am a member of the engine drop club. Obligatory pic below.

You might be sorry when you put it back in. :)
The "putting in" is harder than taking out. Way more effort to align correctly stressing the parts. IMHO, there is no advantage in removing the engine and leaving the transmission in. |
Good news!!
Is that plate special order? 911 TRG |
Gunter not really I am dropping the tranny tomorrow as well, just that I had gotten so far in just dropping the engine that I went ahead anyway. It became apparent during the drop that the install will be better done with tranny out.
Wayne yes it is a special order/vanity plate I wanted 911 SC but someone beat me to it so 911 TRG for Targa it had to be. |
Cool.
I was thinking more TRG= The Racer's Group. |
Thats a good one Wayne maybe I will use that now! Anyway started tearing into it today got the CIS removed and the shroud and wiring harness. Not good news #2 valve is bent and the conn rod has made a real mess. I have a job and a half ahead of me and may go for the alternative of picking up a replacement engine then spending time re-building this one

Internal Damage
Well I have the engine down to the short block and am finding the extent of the internal carnage. Number 2 conn rod is seriously bent and the wrist pin did considerable damage to the block as well which I am hoping is saveable. The only good news in all this is that the cylinders are 95mm Mahle so I am hoping to pick up one and then get a set of JE 10.5:1 pistons. I am going to need one new cylinder head as well as #2 is trashed as well. The cams look good thankfully no damage there so will get them out to the machine shop to have them ground to 964 profile. Will add some Pauter or similar rods to the mix.

Good plan but 10.5 : 1 CR is too much for single plug; 9.8 :1 is about max.
Considering today's octane, I recommend you go with 9.5 : 1 JE pistons in your Mahle cylinders. You just went through a bad experience and don't want detonation. :) You also may need another head for that cylinder? |
911SC plate.........

I got the tag that you wanted but from another continent........ http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272924881.jpg Tony |
That did get torpedoed. I think the consensus is the JE's are more compatible in the long run with Nickies cylinfers as the expansion/contraction of the metals is more in line with each other, than the JE with the Mahle cylinder.
I think their is a big advantage to dropping the motor without the trans-time! I think it is a fair bit faster motor only, and once you understand the relationship between the motor and trans when you mate them, they go right together. |

+1 I've often dropped just the engine. no probs, just disconnect the clutch cable so the fork is free. I hate dealing with the CV grease. installing is MUCH easier with an extra set of hands/eyeballs to line up the clutch fork on the release bearing as you slide the engine onto the trans. |
Re: JE's/Mahle
I think it depends on how it is done. EBS is aware of compatibility issues and has no problem mating Mahle cylinders with JE pistons. They mike out the Mahle cylinders and then order the JE's custom-made according to the measurements allowing for expansion/contraction issues. It becomes academic. If one has to order new 95 mm Nickies plus JE's, one might as well go with MM 98 mm P/C's and make a SS 3.2. In his case, he has 95 mm Mahle cylinders and if they're in spec, I would not hesitate to go with JE's provided it is done correctly by a shop with experience in this matter. Dropping the engine without the transmission may be good for someone with good mechanical skills and experience but for a first-timer it's easier to remove them together. In any case, he's seen the light and made his decision. :) |
