SC Alternator case size differences
Greeitngs-
Just had a challenging day on the re-installation front. Hopefully people can learn from my experience. Are two case sizes for SC alternators? Come to find out the replacement alternator I ordered has 75mm case width, instead of 90mm like the factory Valeo. I could not figure out what was going on, what ever I did the belt was very tight , spend hrs unbolting re-adjusting ect. Finally got the belt barely on and it was rubbing the fan housing and the back surface of the fan was just engaging the housing. Got out my metric rule and deducted that the body was 15 MM different. Blown Saturady. Next time I will measure everything first, step learning curve today, just trusted I was sent the right part they looked very much the same and I was excited to get running again. Think the germans had a hang over when they designed that housing tolerances, and the wire harness length, sure is a SOB to remove the alternator. Questions- Are the 95 amp alternators the way to? Should I send in my original for new bearing ect. Thanks for your time. JS |
Should be only one size on a SC. but if you get the old one rebuilt, than you are assured that it will fit. 95 amp if your running a lot of electrical things like high powered stereo stuff or lots of lights. otherwise, you should be fine with stock.
