996 Transmission question
Greetings All,
Is a '99 six speed transmission the same as a six speed from an '02? Can I install an '02 trans straight into a '99 without any issues or mods? Please let me know. Thanks guys, Bill

Hey Bill, you might want to try either rennlist.com or renntech.org as they have more active 996 forums. Renntech has great technical data, worth signing up.
I believe the transmissions are the same but can't really say for sure. David

I'm also pretty sure that they are basically the same...

Bill,
It's a different trans. The later trans is longer. I think the change came in 01. On a 2 whl drive car it may fit it definitely won't on a 4whl drive (guess how I know ![]()

What Dan J. said is correct. It's not as straight forward a swap as one would think. It's probably the path of least resistance to either find a good used '99 gearbox or have yours rebuilt.
There's recently been an influx of NEW late G96 gearboxes into the states with no core exchange, making the late gearbox seem very attractive. But if you work with the right mechanic, having your original gearbox rebuilt will still be less expensive than buying the new crate gearbox.
