2.4L Engine
 

I have a 2.4 L engine in my 1970 porsche 911T. The 2.4 L engines didn't come out till 1973. I was wondering if there is anyway to tell by numbers on the engine, assuming original, if it is a "S" or an "E" or a "T" motor. I know the valve openings differ in degrees but Im lazy. I would much rather look.

Simple observation sometimes helps.
Yellow fan shroud -T motor
Green E motor
Red S motor
Having carbs, though a lot of folks pitched MFI.
Then you have do numbers to be sure. Post the engine number and somebody will look it up for you.
30+ years-- a lot things can change on a motor from when it left the factory. Look at the cylinders, are they alloy or rust cast iron? Which engines do you think used cast iron cylinders?

It would have to be a 1972 or early 73 engine. Specs are:
1972
"T" engine starts with the number 612
"E" engine starts with the number 622
"S" engine starts with the number 632

1973
"T" engine starts with the number 613
"E" engine starts with the number 623
"S" engine starts with the number 633

One slight modification to the above engine shroud colors for the T's (at least in 1973): the MFI T shroud (first part of the production year) was yellow and then it changed to black for the CIS T (also know as the 73.5 T). Jim :)

The engine 'type number' of the form "911/xx" is stamped to the right of the fan housing:

911/51 & 911/61 --> 2.4 MFI 'T' engine - 'TE'

911/52 & 911/62 --> 2.4 'E' engine

911/53 & 911/63 --> 2.4 'S'

911/57 & 911/67 --> 2.4 ROW carbureted 'T' engine - 'TV'

911/91 & 911/96 --> 2.4 CIS 'T' engine - 'TK'

Side note - does anyone know what engine the "TV" cars came with? My car is a 72 with a "5" in the VIN number indicating a "TV" model according to Bruce. It has MFI. I thought TV was a carb car - maybe it has been converted in the past. Was the TV just the ROW model of the 72?

Jeff, unless the car was produced for the Afghanistan or Iraq market...someplace similar? I never heard of a 1972 911 produced without fuel injection. All 2.4 engines should be injected, one way or another, I would think...

I think the ROW spec '72 - '73 Ts were on carbs. Might be wrong though....

Saffs- you are right. They had carbs and were rated at 130 bhp.
