82 sc idle osculation
my 82 911 runs pretty good, however, the idle is 1k and pulsates up and down ever so slightly. it is also hard to start when hot or cold, the exhaust is very harsh smelling and burns my eyes. i just had the intake gaskets replaced and the o rings on the fuel inj.
i would also like to know what a good cheap way to go for a better exhaust. i have heard of muffler bypass, any other ideas? |

i'd have to say that all my osculation was with marked intent.

You have a mixture issue, whats causing it? It could be you fixed a problem with the new gaskets and now you just need the mixture corrected.

This is normal and if the idle is rock steady, the lambda system is not working properly. Hard starting cold and hot are usually different problems. Start by checking system, control and residual fuel pressures, the CSV and TTS, the throttle microswitches, then the lambda system test routine with a dwell meter at the test connector

...Can you quantify, "ever so slightly" in hundreds of RPM?
I disagree, that a hunting idle is normal. However, an idle that fluctuates, "ever so slightly", could indeed be normal

CIS troubleshooting..........
Quote:
You don't need to pump the pedal accelerator to start a fuel injection system. That method applies to carburated engines. You got more than just an air leak/s and need further inspection. Two (2) things I would do to locate the problem/s: ----pressure test the system for air leak/s. ----check fuel pressures (control, system, and residual). ----if the 2 above tests are good, proceed to have your gas exhaust checked with a gas analyzer. Never tweak your air mixture setting unless you could confirm that you don't have an existing vacuum leak in the system. HTH. Tony Last edited by boyt911sc; 07-24-2011 at 08:17 AM.. |

"the exhaust is very harsh smelling and burns my eyes."
It's obvious that the mixture is too rich: 1. The fuel distributor mixture screw is set incorrectly. 2. The warm-up regulator is not functioning properly. 3. If it has a Lambda ECU, if may not be functioning properly or the enrich switch is not opening or the O2 sensor is grounded. 4. The fuel pressure regulator may be bad causing too high of a system pressure.

Put your location in your profile or something. It's likely someone near you has the tools you need to check this. For instance here in Denver I have the gauge set, gas meter and dwell computers to loan out.
