Restart After Rebuild
Well I'm at that point. The wife helped me get the motor in this last weekend and all is about buttoned up. I put oil and transmission fluid in last night and I'm reviewing the last few checklists to make sure I haven't forgotten anything.
Leland, That piston thing kind of bothers me right about now. Startup anxiety I suppose. I know there has to be something lurking out there. I just hope it's a small something. My question is this: Should I pull the fuel pump relay and crank it over a few times to build oil pressure first? Or just crank her up? Yes, I would recommend pulling the fuel pump relay AND the CDI-unit connector for the pre-lube cranking. I suggest only using the starter in 15-20 second bursts with a couple of minutes rest time between cranking. After you show full oil pressure on the gauge during cranking, I suggest a full minute accumulated time (3 bursts) with full oil pressure ... so the oil can get all the way to the cam squirter tubes, and plenty of lube oil on the cams during the critical warm-up period at between 2000-3000 rpm. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
I did what Warren reccomended... Also once you see the pressure gauge move it is a good time to check all your connections for oil leaks. I found 1 small leak at the thermostat that needed to be tightened up
