Hello,
I am new to this bulletin board and am actually a fairly new porsche owner. I bought my first p-car fufilling a childhood dream back in September and was wondering if there was some place on the web or some other source which would give me the cost of my car if I bough in new in 1985? Thanks. John Mogavero '85 911 Targa |

John-
Welcome to the board & congratulations on fulfilling the dream. I did likewise almost a year ago - '85 Targa like you. Might try calling Porsche North America and asking customer service. I know that you can give them the VIN and they will read back to you the full option list on the car (also for $30-$35 they'll send you a copy of it, though I've heard some who have done it haven't been terribly impressed by what they got.) enjoy!

Come on you "old timers" what would the 85 be worth? How about my 77 Targa? Shawn

I know the answer, but I'm not an "Old Timer" so guess I'll keep it to myself.

In 1985, new 911 targa cost about $ 38,000, more or less depending on options. (911's had lots of optional equipment- even fuchs alloys were optional). In 1977, about $20,000.

Welcome John:
The fun part for me at least was collecting all of the books, magazines, and literature I could. The Porsche Red Book will get you started about specifications, including original cost, so you might want to spend some money in that direction. Also the Bentley manual is a good compromise between the Haynes manual at $12.00 used or the official Porsche manuals at $$$. Jw BTW, I spent a lot of time in Maine; Allagash, St. John rivers, Whitehead island, Penobscot, etc. That is a beautiful state, and so much like Washington. Gotta love daylight at 10PM at night!

Thanks Kurt much appreciated. Where do you find all of these? I would love to have one for mine. I wonder if the dealer would have it after 25 years

If you go to the "find a car" section of the online Washington Post, I think you can do a search for Porsches and it will show the original cost. Or maybe it's the Kelly Blue Book or NADA page. You can find it online -- I just don't remember how exactly.

Richard the Washington Post is great. Only goes back to 83 though
![]() The NADA site says my 77 Targa originally listed for $15, 945 and has a high retail now of only $13,200 Thats a POOR investment. Its gone down $2500 already in 25 years. haha Now I have to find out how to get an "original" sticker for my 77 Targa. Or a photocopy version of any 77 Targa ![]() Shawn

autotrader.com "decision guide" will give you original price but only goes back to 1989. Interesting though, my 964 was listed at $64,445.00

As a datapoint, my 1986 Carrera coupe was $31,950 plus the following options:
Leather steering wheel with raised hub: $47 Monterey digtl. cassette radio: $625 Limited slip differential: $595 Power door locks: $250 15-inch forged alloy wheels: $840 Power sear, right: $380 Cruise control: $320 Sport shock absorbers: $200 Wheel cntr/white gold metallic: $215 Alarm system: $200 Electric sunroof: $966 Add prep at $245 and destination charge at $578 and that should add up to $37,411 Chris. |

Porsche inflation
I guess I was pretty close. Thing to remember is that 911's had a lot of expensive options. Sticker shown for 85 coupe is an expensive one, (full leather, ltd. slip, etc.), most were closer to $37k. As for '77, example is a cheap one. Targas were more than coupes, difference of about $1800.00 I think in 80's, Cars doubled in price from about '75 to '80 in U.S. due to $/mark rate, and continued steady up through 80's. Of course they never lowered price when $ went up. They stayed almost same for 3-4 years in early-mid 80's. In 1986 I worked at dealer and inflation kicked back in; sticker base price of 930 went from $49,000 to $61,000 in one model year! (From beginning to end of '86 production run).
