'72 911T + '74 2.7L engine = which transmission?!

Greetings forumers! This is my first posting as I am just entering the Porsche world. At my disposal I have a '72 911T that needs a bit of sprucing up prior to heading out for a fall cruise. On the list of things that need to be done are: new tires (recommendations?), new transmission linkage, and a new shift cable.

This particular '72 has been retrofitted with a '74 2.7L engine. So, my question to you is this: How can one tell which transmission this car has? I have no problem crawling under and looking around... I just need to know what to look for.

Also, would someone direct me to a good parts source (online or otherwise)?

Thanks in advance!
-nick

If first is to the left and down, you have a 901, If fifth is to the right and up you have a 915 appropriate for a 2.7

A 72 is suposed to have a 915. If you look under the trans you will see an arm dropping down under the bell housing with the clutch cable connected. Thats a 915.

Thank you good sirs. I have much to learn. Any recommendations on where to find parts online? I'm going to need new linkage and a clutch cable.

After that, there really is no telling what you might have in there. Check the part number on the clutch cable support mount and hope it's a 73 or later. The reason I say this is because the 72 was the only year where you had to disassemble the tranny to replace the seal, if leaking, but if it’s a rebuilt 72 with no leaks then be happy.
The three door is the best year porsche wise, welcome aboard.

Look for the trans type number on the bottom by the drain plug. It can be worn sometimes and difficult to make out.
