Looks like you're right. And he's getting good money for it too! What a rip-off. Look at his previous auction:

"This is not a Porsche product. This is my own burned copy of internet links (and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0) only and doesn't actually contain documents. The internet web pages contain info on all of the items mentioned in the auction. The forums or BBS's can answer any and all questions you may have about your Porsche(s). This CD has a plethora of links to specialized sites!)"

This is what he claims in the auction.....Is it still illegal? I mean, he went through the trouble of putting everything on one CD.

I can name at least 10 companies out there that do just that and sell millions of CDs!

Somebody please explain the illegalities to me. thank you.

it's not illegal, but I think it is sad for these bidders that if they search under www.msn.com porsche tech articels you could save 80 dollars

Many of the titles he lists are directly from the tech articles from this board. All he needed to do is burn www.pelicanparts.com on a cd and charge $85 for the great content of this BBS.

There are so many great people giving their time on this board advising and helping the less experienced, it's just a rip-off to have a little jerk make money of it. Just my opinion.

It's messed up that he is doing this and making so much from it, but at the same time there are obvious benefits to wayne. If this guys has links to pelican parts on his cd, then these people will be drawn to pelican parts and potentially buy things from them.

Yes, it is probably illegal. A quick email to Ebay should shut him down.

First off, unless he has a license agreement with Adobe, his putting a copy of Acrobat on a CD for sale is against the law.

If he has *any* bits of text on the document, he is violating copyright of the sites (assuming they have a policy stated somewhere.

Many web sites have "terms of use" policies that prohibit even linking to their content through a commercial venture (Wayne, you might want to check out Adobe's terms).

Just another opportunist skirting intellectual property laws....

Well, I guess someone has to actually buy a copy before the Colorado Attorney General will process a 'cease and desist' order ...

I wonder how many copies he thinks he can sell before the legal wolves start barking REAL LOUD at his doorstep?

well I guess I never thought of the added benefits of linking to Pelican's site...

I guess the added traffic does help...

and if the seller goes into this fully knowing that it is a bunch of links and not anything special...I guess that is his perogative...

well

caveat empor (or how ever those latinos spell that)

I did email this fellow asking for more information. If all it contains is a CD of links, then all the power to him, I suppose.

I think that he is basically suckering people into buying the CD. As long as he is not duplicating my material, and selling it with his name on it, then I can't see how this would hurt me.

Heck, if people started selling copies of my CD-ROM on Ebay, I wouldn't mind either. If there are people out there naive enough to buy something that you can easily get for free, then they'll learn eventually.

Other than the illegal copy of the Porsche manual he's selling on Ebay, I can't really find too much illegal about this CD...

???

Wow, according to his description it's nothing other than links to webpages, not an actual document on the thing. Uh, can anyone say, yahoo, google, dogpile, metacrawler???

Hey, I've got some really good links, anybody want to buy em. I can tell you where to find among other things the Pelican Parts website complete with lot's of technical info and a Web Bulletin Board, and I'll even through in the link to Rennlist.com, oops, crud, well you'll get that one anyway.

The worst part about this.......Whoever this is, has obviously been on this board. Probably MANY times. I would like to know who it is.

IF the CD is no more than a set of links, I think the guy has a right to sell them. And it might be valuable to somebody else who doesn't have the time/skill to do exhaustive searching. I've got hundreds of links bookmarked. I didn't find them all doing a single search on Google - it's taken me years to accumulate them all. I don't think I would be willing to just give them away to anyone who asked! There're all kinds of books at Barnes & Noble that are nothing more than lists of internet links. Isn't that pretty much the same thing as this CD?

I see he is including Adobe Acrobat. We recently passed the EAR-99 (not containing and encryption or enablement of encryption) test for the US Gov. for our products. In doing so, we learned that Acrobat is an "enabler" of encryption and thus is not to be included in any product that is intended to be shipped to "suspect" countries, such as Iran, Libya, or otherwise.

Maybe THAT fact would give him pause. Alot of follks don't undertand the aspect of "enabler" software in relation to pure encryption software, such as SSH/SSL etc. It usually bites you just as you ship...

Like it was said earlier, let him sell it. They're only links.

My business considers our 'sources of supply' and 'vendor lists' to be our property. These sources are available to anyone who spends the time, money, and effort (sometimes it takes a bit of luck, too) to track them down. Well, I DID spend the time, money, and effort to produce these data bases and would only make them available to others for a price. If his customers find it convenient let them spend $80.

Wayne, you may want to have the guy insert something like "Pelican Parts has not authorized nor endorsed this product" (check with one of the attorneys here). Who knows, one misrepresentation on his part and you're stuck paying to defend yourself as an 'et al' player. Also, from a PR standpoint, if he or his product ever flakes on a customer most will realize Pelican wasn't involved.

I agree nothing Illegal I don't think. Just wrong to me, like some kind of legal scam.

cegerer- I disagree with you on one point. ANY and ALL links that I have found, I would GIVE to ANYONE to help them out. Hey we are all here to learn, why waste time going down the wrong trails.

My $.02

Shawn, I guess I wasn't really referring to my Porsche-related links. I've posted many of my Porsche links on this BBS, including some last night. I think, at best, this guy's eBay ad for the CD is misleading - at worst, it's probably illegal in some respect. -- Curt
