Performance Aire underbelly Condenser
I contacted them about this underbelly Condenser and this is what they said:
"Please note that an '88 930 has a hump (approximately 4" square and 1" deep) in its pan directly below the shifter. On a 930 with the 4-speed 930 transmission this hump is not needed. In order to flush-mount our Static Condenser against the pan, this hump must first be flattened. This involves removing the shift lever assembly, flattening this hump with a hammer and block of wood, and then reinstalling the shift lever assembly. That being said, many installers choose not to do this which means the center-rear of the Static Condenser "bows" instead of being flush up against the pan" My question is, I have a 5 speed G50 Trans. not the 4 speed, can this hump still be deleted or does the G50 need it? Thanks ( its getting warm here in FL)

There was some discussion on this last year about this time. Too far back for me to remember the outcome. Try a search.

How much does the underbelly unit cost?
What is the status of your present a/c system? (stock compressor, R-12 hoses, etc?) The reason I ask is because the Procooler system from Rennaire @ $1129 may be more cost effective and replaces all the weak links in the r-12 system and gives you a real r134 evaporator that works ![]() ![]() ![]() Ted

The cost of condenser is $500 shipped. When I bought my car the AC was removed. I removed a whole system from a 87 for $100. I bought a new compressor & reciever dryer. My car has a full bay IC so no room for rear Condenser. This seems to be the best option. So I'm up to about $1000.

My research from the Kuehl AC guys gives me the impress that post '84 cars have compressors that are up to standard and unlike earlier cars do not need replacing. This assumes you have a working unit. Ditto on the barrier hoses. Should be able to get ice cold air with just the Procooler and the Evaporator so the cost should be halved. Simon

Rob:
Are you going to use r-12 or r-134?

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that 911's used non barrier hoses through 1988. I know that my freon used to leak out every year or so until I changed over to barrier hoses.
If you get the underbelly, it costs $435 plus shipping and if you return it to them there is a 15% restocking fee. (Plus you have to pay to ship it back to them... another $70 or so.) My mechanic was very concerned about the hump issue and the need to beat it with a hammer/block of wood. My 88 930s is pristine and i feel that i can get air cold enough without having to resort to altering body panels. |

No need to flatten Hump, I just installed the underbelly condenser. It can bend areound hump and no problem. Clearence is not an issue.
![]() ![]() ![]() AC shop near my house is making new barrier hoses $150.00. Almost done.

I''d like to see pictures of how you routed your hoses when you're done. I had Performance Aire install my underbelly condenser and I'm not completely satisfied with their routing.

hmm..if there are certain 'standard' lengths, like for a stock system on my '74..wonder if that shop would wanna do some more..$150 is half of what the specialty shops price..

Would also like to know the sequence that you guys used in installing everything.
Believe that I am going to lose the front condensor when my nose oil cooler is installed so will end up with a engine hood mounted condensor and the underbelly one. Will try to keep the nose mounted condensor but not sure that there is room. JoeA

Ryan,
From an excellent A/C thread Barrier vs Non-Barrier A/C hoses Jim Sims writes.... "Barrier hose likely will have the specification number SAEJ2064 or IMACA Standard 320 printed periodically along the hose; many manufacturers also print "barrier" on the hose." From a Jag site: " R-12 hose. How can you tell? Because it has cloth on the outside. Reportedly later R-12 hoses were color coded red, but still cloth. Those hoses are no longer manufactured, but there is equivalent hose commonly available that is black; they're just not listed as intended for freon. By the way, that hose has braided metal under the cloth. You won't be cutting this hose with a razor knife. Barrier hoses have smooth rubber surfaces"
