How much would you pay for a 2.2 engine?
I found a 2.2 engine from a 1971 911T for sale in the LA area. Unfortunately I am in VA. I talked with the owner and here is what I know:
The engine has 80k miles on it. He has owned the car for about 2 years. The engine had a compression and leakdown test a couple months ago: #1 145 - 7%, #2 152 - 3%, #3 155 - 3%, #4 152 - 5%, #5 147 - 6%, #6 155 - 3%. This test was run by TRE Motorsports in LA area. He does not have any prior paperwork on the engine. He has photos and even a video of the engine running and it sounds and looks good. He is upgrading to a 3.0 because the car is an RS clone (beautiful too!) He was very forthcoming with information and proactively provided the contact info to the shop and his mechanic. I talked with both the owner and the mechanic. Both state the engine does not smoke, it starts and runs well. He is running with Webers currently but is selling with the Zeniths. I am okay with this since I had my Zeniths rebuilt recently. As you may know from my recent post, I am looking to replace my wornout 2.2 in my 1970 911T. I am not ready to spend the $$ to upgrade/rebuild that engine at this time. The way I see it, for $2k, this is a good deal if the engine is as represented. Anyone know of this shop? Could I possibly bribe someone in the Calabasas area to take a look at it? I almost hate to solve my engine problem so quickly but the thought of spending $4k-$8k for a rebuild doesn't sit well with my wallet. I don't want to cut corners but right now I would rather swap engines. I can then tear the other one apart and learn how to rebuild it on my own but still have a car to drive. Thanks for any input! I think the only time I would spend that kind of money for a 2.2 would be if I wanted to keep the original displacement. Or rebuild my existing.
I would save my money and get a good used 3.0 or a 3.2 (seen 'em for ~$6k-7k). Saving my pennies. Good luck.

I do not Think there is a big demand for a 2.2T so it should not command a high price. Also the condition of the Zeineths are unknow even though you have a set to use that to your advantage. Offer $1200 you still have shipping to pay and any unknowns.

I've gotta go with Noah on this one. Jeeze, what do you lowballers want? I've got a pool cue that would easily sell for more than $2K. A well running Porsche 911 engine for that? A bargain. The price of the heads & valves alone.... OKay, rant done.

I sold the original 2.2 out of my car with the 901 for $1200. And it took me a while to do that. This also isn't Cali either. $2000 isn't bad for the piece of mind getting from a reputable dealer. I second what Noah said about Old Dominion if you have to ship, they are good and it gets there when they say.

Dan,
In October I began a motor transplant for my 1970 911 E. The motor I removed was an original 2.2 E motor with Webers, Ported Heads, New hydraulic tensioners, chains, rails, and recent tune up items, and about 10k miles on rebuild. This motor ran very well. The long and short of it is I sold the Motor(carbs thru exhaust) and the 901 tranny for $3500. I thought it was a fair deal for me and a fair deal for the recipient. I too sent video and a stack of records during the courtship process. $2k sounds fair for the motor although the Webers would add serious kick. I have personally dealt with Dave Bouzaglou many times and have found him to be one of the more honest P-Guys around. Good luck with it.

Thanks for everyone's replies. This information is very helpful!!
BTW, the engine I was looking at is now posted on eBay. At this point I'm inclined to not make a decision so quickly, especially since the wife is not excited about having this expense this year. And with snow and salt around the corner I will have limited time to drive. I think that there is a lot that I am going to take into consideration including considering a 3.0L engine .....so I will probably have many more questions as I conitinue on my quest!--Dan |
