Heading back to Australia

YeHa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going back to Aus, after nearly 10 years away. I'm so sick of the cold and rain in the UK, how ever I do like the UK. Driving in France and all over I will miss.
So the big question is I'm going to take the Porsche back with me. I have been reading a lot of reports from people that have taken there cars back to Australia and from having to jump though many hoops seems all ok?
Has any one here done this ? I have owned this car for 6 years in the Channel Islands plus 9 months in the UK. The car is a 1985 911 Carrera Sport. No AC (buger) .
Estimated price in the UK for the car is £14000-£16000, If I pay £4000-£5000 to land the car I'm ok. This gives me a car I love and know plus no diking around having to find some thing earls.
I will be taking house stuff with me but only small things not furniture.

Thanks Steve needing help........

Is it RHD or LHD?

Can't help with the other questions but hopefully someone will chime who can.

Hi Steve,

I haven´t done it in Australia but I have from the US to Germany and I work in Shipping. Friends in Australia have told me 911´s are relatively expensive there due to the Taxs. Have a look at this link but as first port of call I would talk to the customs in Oz to get an idea of what the costs could be. There might be an exemption from the standard 10% as an expat and you have owned the car for years. Unfortunately as its an 85 model you miss the 30 year exemption. You´ll need a container anyway so bunging you personal belongings in with the car marked as personal effects will save you some money as the cheapest alternative would be a standard Carton with DHL to oz at around 70Euro from Germany(don´t know the rate from the UK. Good luck

Steve, I'm no guru on it but I am aware that as you've owned it on a legitimate sabbatical from Oz, you can bring it back as a personal import without the associated duties and taxes - there still hoops and hurdles to negotiate with the actual shipping and quarantine requirements (they must be uber clean), but you're also ahead of the game with it being RHD.

Good luck with your move.

Yipes I just noticed it was for a temporary import. Still they should be able to help on a permanent one if contacted

Steve,

The links provided should give you enough info on the costs of bringing your car over. I am no expert but believe the personal ownership will save you significant costs.

Another consideration is the cost to purchase one when you get back to Aus. As you probably know, the cars here are frightfully expensive when compared to UK and especially US. In my case I have an 83SC (UK Import). I understand that in the UK they cost somewhere around £10-12000 for a reasonable one. Here the same car will cost closer to $40000 AUD, although bit of negotiating will get that down into the high $30's. I am sure that the guys in the US will freak when they hear these prices!!

If I were you I would strongly consider bringing the car with you. Many enthusiasts turn their nose up at imports (especially from UK as rust is often an issue) however I believe the car speaks for itself. If it is a good example and you love it then that's all that matters IMO.

If you bring it with you you'll never regret selling it!!

Excellent overview of process and costs. Only thing is to apply current rates as the AUD is quite strong at the moment. Also some VicRoads charges will apply whether you are buying a local car or bringing in your own (ie. stamp duty on transfer)

Hi
I shipped mine over with other stuff a year ago.
You will need a import approval before you ship the car, they wont like it and could send it back if you dont.
Take it and give it a good clean, Customs might do this as well and charge you.
I thought they were going to go over the top with the car inside and out but i dont even think they looked inside and gave it a quick once over.
You will have to pay for $150 or so for it to be valued then if they are happy with it just the custom charges.
I have owned mine 4 years and you a lot longer 9 or so, so there is no problem there.
I was supprised at the cost overall.
Personal import with gst, customs and value came to around $1700, that was it.
When you read up on importing it sounds like it will cost a fortune.
Ill have a look for the paperwork if you need any more info.
All-in-all its a piece of cake

Paul

I brought my 71 Targa with me to Australia. Do not use Cargo Online or Schumacher. If the car is RHD you might have very little trouble. Mine was exempt due to its age (pre-85) but I know my neighbor brought is 2003 Saab with him from Blighty and had no issues.

Get marine insurance for sure. I hade a 911 totalled in shipment by the aforementioned clowns.

You will find your car is worth A LOT more in Australia.

Have a LH drive 76 911s, is it worth importing?

Have owned the car for 5 years, and have considered shipping it back to OZ.. Don't like the idea of driving on it on the left side of the road there... I'm asking $12,000 (craigs, chicago)here and wonder if it would be easier to sell in Queensland.. I needs a complete paint job, which would be done here,, I love the car but realize I would have to sell it there... Also have two large tool boxes & small amount of house hold furniture... g rad

g rad,

Queensland rules (and most other States) allow 30+ year old cars to be registered in LHD format. Your car in its current condition would probably get you only $15k (AU). If you don't want to drive it on the left side of the road and unless you love the car and have an attachment to it, you'd be better of selling it there. However the 911 over here is a relatively expensive car in native RHD format, and the equivalent car delivered here in RHD will cost you about $25k+ (AU)

If you can somehow find yourself a RHD car over there to bring back, you'll be miles in front...

I second this. In general a LHD in Aus is worth far less than a RHD even it can be registered without too much of a PIA.

Better to sell this one and try to find a RHD to bring over - or buy one here.

But if he buys a RHD with the intent to import doesn't he have to own it for 12 months tobe exempt from import taxes ??
