Warren, 1 More Voltage Regulator Question
Warren,
In an earlier post you stated that if the Black DF wire was connected to the back of the alternator, it needed an external regulator. Since I just refinished the fan, I'm trying to determine this without pulling the alternator. I did learn this: The engine harness has a 3 prong plug coming off it which appears to connect to a noise suppressor(sp?). There is a Brown, Light Blue, and Black on the plug. The black is marked on the plug DF . Can this be an indicator or is it mandatory to pull the alternator ? Thanks.

Rich,
If that is the 3.3 engine harness, then, it definitely had a VR when it left the factory. Sounds like you do need to pull the alternator again to see if it has been changed out.

Warren,
Just so I'm certain here: Your feeling is that the 3 prong plug indicates the car left the fasctory with an external regulator ? Thanks again.

Yes, Rich, the post-'73 Voltage regulators and noise suppresors used that same 3-pronged plug! The noise suppresor can be disconnected and the engine cable could be plugged directly into the VR if necessary for troubleshooting purposes and run without a suppressor, if it failed.
