Art,
Since replacement lenses for all of the production 911 headlamp assemblies are still available at a reasonable price, why not just replace the pitted lens? The VW part for the '49-'66 Beetle is made by Hella and identical to the lens used in '65-'67 911/912 assemblies. The H1, H4, and H5 lenses are readily available from aftermarket suppliers, including Pelican!

I agree. Replacements lens are fairly cheap and readily available.
But if you must, I have had good luck removing the pits on turn signal lenses by using a belt sander with very fine sandpaper and then using a rubbering compound to bring them back to life. The results have been as good as new. I don't know how it would work on glass, however.

I would just replace them and then apply the inexpensive headlight protection film available anywhere. Kept mine looking new for 3 years now, and is barely visible.
