Roadconditions

Hi All,
Got a few emails regarding the road conditions...well with us on these roads..hazardous.....
When we made the Rallye book we choose the smallest roads with the least traffic to give us the open road feeling and blast...
In the whole trip from Kerrville to Fredericksburg are only 7 cattleguards, 2 construction zones.
Deer are not to be on the roads at the time we drive, cows got the memo.
No dirtroads and just a few low bridges that might have some water, but din't when we were driving.
So we tried to avoid the mistakes from the past and to make it a challenging, fun not so relaxing drive.
However we are in the country side and wildlife is present, gravel is at the side of the roads, so we want all to be safe , have fun and tell their tales at the tables....

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend this event last year and have to say it was a blast. The people are great and the roads were a lot of fun. Stefan, Jamie, Mike, Bob, David and others really know how to put on an enjoyable event. I highly recommend attendance if you have the means.

I wish I could attend, but unfortunately it is not in the cards this year.

GTS, I live in Kerrville and would be happy to help with any local needs. Call me 830-890-5158 or PM if you need anything. I missed last year since our house was finishing construction. Done with that and happy to be on the local roads.

It looks like we have 12 people signed up so far. Last year we had a lot more but I notice that many of you are not yet registered.

Now let's talk about meeting some new faces. If you are in the surrounding states of NM, CO, OK, LA, AR, MS, TN, etc you should consider driving in for this event. It is less than a day's drive in. I guarantee you will have fun.

The event is focused on the early 911s. However, we welcome any like minded individuals who love great roads, great camaraderie and smiling faces.

Three days to go. Can't wait to meet up with everyone again.

btw, for those traveling through the Austin area I am planning a back roads route to get there. I plan to leave after lunch (approximately 1pm) and would love to have some people in the caravan. Expect about a 3 hour tour with some great roads.

Ahhh What a weekend. As usual it was a great event and if you didn't make it to Kerrville. "You shoulda been there!"

A group of seven cars met in the drizzling rain on Friday afternoon for the caravan down to Kerrville. Here we are lined up and waiting for the last two to get gas.

Kerrville is SouthWest of Austin and can be reached after about 100 miles of driving the most direct route through small ranch roads. The weather was still raining and coming down hard enough to confuse the camera and many of the other drivers on the road. Thank goodness for RainX and good wipers.

The farther we got out of town, the more the weather improved. Drizzle left for dry air and wet roads. Eventually, the roads began to dry and traction greatly improved.

As the roads dried out we could take advantage of curves, dips and elevation changes.

We stopped at a local vineyard for a quick break and regroup.

After leaving the vineyard we found that the last segment of our trip was under construction. We can all thank Bill for this since he made the remark asking if the entire route was paved. Yes, years ago I led a few drives that ended up pavement free for a few sections. Since no traffic was on the road I used the opportunity to practice my cone slalom skills. I nearly took off the two side mirrors since the markers were so tall. The fun only lasted about 2 miles so no cars were damaged during the mayhem.

Upon arrival into Kerrville it was a bit of mud and big smiles. Charles is liking his new car.

Of course, it was said this might be the first time we were "welcomed."

After the reserved parking was taken we took over the parking lot with beers and brats. Lots of stories of the drives in and general catching up with old friends. It was great to see so many smiling faces. And to think the weekend was just beginning to start.

Friday night had some heavy rain come down. We were not sure what to expect on Saturday and the general breakfast conversations were questions related to the route, weather and who stayed up drinking the night before.

Once everyone was fed we lined up for the start of the days route. Stefan, our resident seat expert (GTS Classics) had the most fitting starter flag imaginable. Twin color Houndstooth was the perfect way to wave us on! Of course, you would not miss the starting point either if you were driving through town and saw all these great cars lined up at a hotel.

Leaving town on the "loop" to Fredericksburg the roads were damp and the traffic was light except for a white Miata that was going Oh, So, Slow. Eventually this cleared and we were free to explore. Here are some random shots from the car on the way to our first official rest stop. yes, the Hill Country has fantastic roads. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Coming Around! btw, Inside wheel spin is much fun. I gotta get an LSD in this car.

"West bound and down, Loaded up and truckin' we're gonna do what they say can't be done!" At least this is my interpretation.

Pit stop! This allowed for used coffee to be expelled and allow a few slow morning farm trucks get a gap. Yes, the scenery in TX is fantastic!

Back on the road again. What goes up...

.... Must come down!

Wide Open spaces. Wrapped! Somewhere in TX.

Creekside in TX. I really wanted to stop for a swim.

A quick gas stop for all. Nothing but smiles so far in this first leg of the morning loop.

Stonhenge does exist in TX. I had heard about it. Just never seen it until now. Yes, it is a miniature version.

More great roads to drive. No comment necessary. First, imagine the sound of a flat six at speed. Then look at the picture. Next, close your eyes and feel the side load while the suspension compresses to complete the sensation. Yes, it was nearly continuous for 3.5 hours!

At the end of the drive there were no LEOs spotted and no one ended up here!

Our Final destination for a great lunch.

We took up three tables that allowed old friendships to re-establish and new ones to form.

Follow the leader.

Wide Open Spaces.

Going up into the switchbacks.

Mark's 74 Carrera Coming down out of the switchbacks.

The only mechanical for the weekend was a broken clutch cable on John's 66 911. This happened as he pulled into the parking lot after the drive. Here is the diagnosis. Of course, no one had a spare for this early car which meant a tow home.

At the end of the day it was time for a great dinner and our own "awards" show.

I hope that more of you can make it next year!

I especially want to thank Stefan for organizing the event. I also want to thank everyone, especially including the 912 group, that came out to support the rally. It is always great hanging out with everyone.

I really hope to make it next year. Sounds like you hit some more great roads in the Hill Country.

Too bad about the clutch cable John. I would have had an extra one for ya.

Mark and Scott,

We missed you guys. Maybe next year. Being down in Kerrville really puts you next to the best terrain and driving. We will consider similar locations in the future.

Yes, we could have used the extra cable. Autozone had them for $13 but we could not get one until Tuesday. I think everyone will be carrying an extra from now on.

Is it a Long Hood only event? Don't see any short hoods in the pics.

Did you go through Boerne, I've got a good friend that lives there and have been on many of those roads; in an SUV...
