Project over time for an aged 76' 911s
I have a 1976 911s my dad rebuilt 25 years ago. I am aware he had the engine balanced and blueprinted and the internals all gone through. It has 170k on it with 60 since the rebuild. It also has old bilstiens and is lowered a lot from when he raced it. It is running great from a driving standpoint but i want to bring it back to a better level. I will be driving a bit and may bring it for a few track days.
The headers and heat exchanger are rusted out, and it has the stock muffler. I would love to have heat, but what are some good options other than the SSI ones? Also the ignition system is "hoopdy" to say the least. It has random wire connecting who knows what. To start i was thinking the petronix kit and plug wires? Should i replace all the suspension bushings with the elephant racing kits and polybronze? Please point me in the right direction i really dont know what goes bad on the car over time, it sat for a long time, just want to keep it reliable and "race" it up a bit. I am very handy with a wrench and can do almost all the work myself and friends with, luckily there is a shop down the road that can give me advice. Thanks in advance |

exhaust
My exhaust was upgraded to a 80 or so, you could do the same and still have heat.
i would get the car running with points, then add pertronix later just so you can trouble shoot easier rather than adding layers of complexity that may not be wired correctly.

What do you mean by 80, sorry if this sounds dumb. Also the car runs great how it is, the ignition works, dont know how, but it does...

Michael, welcome to the forum. You will find lots of advice and friends here. One thing I suggest is to post as many pictures of the car, engine, suspension, or whatever else you can shoot. Not only do we all love to see pictures of cars, but it will greatly help anyone who wishes to offer help or suggestions to see what you already have and its condition.
I think 47silver meant that his exhaust was upgraded to one from a model year 1980 car, from its original 1975 set up. 75 had some components that hurt the efficiency of the exhaust and, in the case of Cal. cars, caused premature failures with the engine. Thus, a later system would be an upgrade. (47silver, please correct me if I'm wrong.) Since your engine has already been rebuilt, the car previously raced, and the exhaust is rusted, and you won't need to pass emissions because it will be a track car (did I understand you correctly on that?), you can put any exhaust that fits your pocket book on the car. Again, welcome to the fun house. Post pictures, save your money for the inevitable expenses, and see if you qualify for mental health insurance ![]()

Thanks a lot. I will get pics asap for you guys to look at. Also i will being tracking the car once in a while, its just street most of the time. Im good with emissions though, my local garage likes me lol, so any header/mufflers are a go. On top of that i just found out it has the hydraulic chain tensioner kit and dry sump kit from the turbo models, good news so far.

If you haven't already done it, I would start with servicing all the fluids, flush the brake system, check the brake hoses, go over all your fuel lines and vac hoses. Then work out from there.
What a great opportunity to keep and maintain some of the family history, congratulations...

is this a low buck thing or what? SSIs are top notch unless you want to save a few lbs. and do w/o heat.
do what Mitch said. I'd replace the rubber brake hoses with new rubber rather than just squeeze them. after that & all fluids, do the suspension over with polybronze and get the car back on its maintenance schedule for more fun see: Long term & Commonly Neglected Maintenance |
