Kendall Three Star Syn G50 Results
I don't want to start another 100 post thread but I want to share the results of my gear oil change. Based on the advice of Peter Zimmerman I changed out the gear oil in my '89 Carrera (G50, factory short shift, LSD) from Red Line synthetic to Kendall Three Star 75W90 synthetic.
I was experiencing what I felt were overly hard and notchy shifts. The old gear oil only had 4K on it but I felt it was worth a try based on Peter's recommendation. Again, this is only my experience. As they say "your results may vary". In my car the shifting was noticeably improved (but still not perfect). The difference between driving the car in for the gear oil change (I supplied the gear lube) and driving it home was substantially better. It was definitely worth the money. No need to slow shift or rev match now. For those having the same issue, try the Kendall Three Star synthetic in your G50 before spending a lot of money on other gear box fixes. Thanks Peter Z. |

I have Redline for LSD in mine and I've been wanting to try a different lube.
Two questions: How long has the old lube been in there and did you do any other adjustments when you put the Kendall in?

Kendall Super Three Star
As I mentioned, the PO put Red Line synthetic in about 3 years and 4K miles ago based on the service records I have. I assume, but can't confirm, that LSD additive was also put in with the Red Line synthetic. If not, perhaps that accounts for the difference I've seen.
There were no other changes except switching to the Kendall Super Three Star synthetic with LSD additive. I bought a gallon of it from Peter Zimmerman's old shop which is called Red Line Service in Long Beach, CA. Apparently it only comes in bulk containers but they sell it in one gallon quantities. They also added the Kendall LSD additive to it for me. It's worth a try if you have hard shifts. Let me know what your experience is if you try it. |
