Fuel pressure, starts and dies

Yesterday, for the first time, (it was warm out), when I started the car, it would start up, but then the tach would drop to 0 and it would die. Upon re-starting, it was fine. I am guessing a problem with the fuel pressure leaking down so it is not getting enough fuel on start up. This happened about 4 times on 4 startups. Car runs fine, otherwise. Where do I look first?

when it dies, do any of the dash lights come on? oil, alt, IE, is there electrical power?

if it has been sitting, i would be looking at the plunger in the FD.

just some other things to look at if it has been sitting.
air leaks
stuck/frozen advance in dist
if you have gauges, never hurts to check cold control pressure

It does sound like a residual pressure problem. Here's an easy, no tools, test to get you started (no pun intended) in your diagnosis.

Before you start up next time, pressurize the system by turning on the ignition, removing the air filter, and gently lifting on the plunger in the intake until the injectors squeal. If the engine now starts without dying shortly thereafter, you likely have a residual pressure problem. If it still dies, the problem is elsewhere.

CIS needs fuel pressure, the best diagnostic is pressure gauges. Our host carries them. Specs are in the Bentley manual.

Hot start is usually the check valve in the pump neck.

The symptoms occur for both hot and cold starts. Would some techron help if it is the plunger in the fuel distributor? I will bust out the bentley. Thanks for the ideas to start with.

Techron is pretty mild. I would do Seafoam...change the oil afterwards.
