2.2 distributor application question
 
Hi

I have a 2.2T , and was told its distributor needs to be replaced by my mechanic.

I have found a bosch 2.2 s unit and wondered if or how it would work with my engine.

All I know is that its limiter will be higher.

I hope you haven't found the same "S". I am wondering the same thing, can an "S" distributor be recurved to T specs? If so approximate cost. Anyone you would recommend for the task in Northern California?

I'd be happy to swap my tired carbureted engine for a peppier fuel injected version:D My wife had a 1st or 2nd year MR2 when we first met but it was stolen and stripped down to nothing but the tub. Was a pretty fun car to drive.

We must have found different dist, I am in the process of purchasing one. Good luck with yours.

I emailed Steve Weiner re-curving the 2.2 "S" dist to 2.2 "T" spec, he felt the 2.2 "S" dist would work fine if set to 35 degrees total advance. Gets expensive to re-curve so I sure hope he is right. I guess if you want to wait and use me for a guinea pig I can let you know how the dist works for me.

If you read my recent post re: the clutch release it may be a little while before the car is up and going again. I am in the process of degreasing the tranny right now, then onto the tranny side of the motor, then clean up the engine compartment a little, then finally put everything back together.

Sure you can recurve most distributors to any curve you want.

Its just some wights and springs. Not a miracle.

Yes, my 1st yr MR2 is a great little car. No T Tops :), and a 7500 rpm redline , with no vtech! It's unfortunately relagated to my winter car now with the 911 put away. Fun driving in the snow!

The kikker for me is the exchange rate. This unit is 200US$ , and by the time I get it I am looking at $400 Canadian.

FTR. Wayne's book is excellent, but it cost $70 of my dollars up here!!! An expensive Christmas gift! Thanks Mom!

The dist I found is $100, $105 with shipping, and yes I bought it. Part number is 0231-159-007. Seems the exchange rate sucks for you. Try posting a wanted ad. I did and that is how I found the dist. I had someone write me about a 69 "T" dist but they haven't gotten back to me after I asked for a part number. I also had someone offer me a 70/71 "T" dist that turned out to be a 73 "T" dist based on part number 0231-169-008 and the 73's had a different size housing that fits into the engine case. see Warren's and John Walker's post here Very important to check part numbers in my opinion since I had many people tell me they had a dist for me that turned out to be something other than what it was represented as. I assume these are innocent mistakes based on fading memories, etc, but I don't want to be a party to the mistakes. I bought the "S" dist since it was a good price and I didn't want to miss the opportunity while waiting to here back about the 69 "T" dist. If/when I here back about the 69 "T" dist I'll send you the info.
