no engine serial # or type #, what do i have?

i recently bought a vw bus with a 911 & trans. (bought it for the drivetrain)
there is no engine serial number or type # in the normal place. the seller didnt know what size the engine was either. is there any ways by looking at it to know what size it is?

the transmission is a 911/01 (1970 E) so it seems likely the engine could be out of the same car but it has 40IDTP webers on it. the ones with 4 digit serial #s on them. was it common to convert the inj to carb? especially since its an engine swap, where they probably couldnt get it to run after the swap..

the casting # is 901 101 102 2R

ive only had 3.2 and 3.0 before non this early

additional
the case is painted so i dont know if it is mag or not, i will have to get out a file and check it.
it appears to have been rebuilt at some point from the rtv oozing out here and there.and lower cyl tins painted red etc.
the cylinders do not appear rusty but a magnet kinda sticks to them
it has 1971/2 style air cleaner with the plastic snorkel tube on the air cleaner

Could be a 914/6 engine. Serial # and engine type is up on top by the flywheel.

A 102.2R case half (with 101.3R on the other side) would generally be a 2.2 engine. But without #'s that would indicate a replacement case. So the internals came from some other engine, more likely earlier than later. The only way to know what you have is to take it apart.

I know I won't be as helpful as some here, and those people will be very helpful if they have photos to look at.

Go take some. . . .

Good luck!
