Rear torsion bar position, what's up?

I'm installing 27mm rear torsion bars on the 73, I know the torsion bar tube is open all the way through, can you get one
bar in too far? The drivers side bar is out slightly from the right side bar, what's happening? It feels like the drivers side bar is seating against something solid or am I just feeling the right side bar..... Never noticed this before.

Bruce,

I believe the center spline is continuous, because I have heard or read that you can drive out a broken bar by knocking it out with the other bar.

So, it would be possible to install the 'first' bar you put in ... a bit too far in.

Warren, I think I'll check that tomorrow. Seems like the only option that makes sense. Thanks

Hello

2nd Warren.

It is so. Sometimes the only chance to remove a brocken torsionbar is by hammering it out from the or to the other side.

To much grease can sometimes fill that area but if you press hard it will squish out. When you bolt down the spring plate the grease will also wander out over the time.
But simetimes the torsionbar will stick to wide out and burst the endcap out.

Thanks Warren and Roland, I was able the center the torsion bars by using a brass drift, with weight off the car (no engine/trans/trailing arms) the bars slid
in and out with not much effort. Turns out mine were centered when they protruded beyond the body 4 cm.

On my 72, the passenger side bar is about a quater inch farther out than the drivers side. I called a shop thinking the same thing and they told me not to worry about it. 10,000 miles later, all is fine
