Installing second decklid shock - where do you get the longer pin?
 

Hi, I'm trying to install a rear spoiler, and I've read here (as well as in the 101 projects book) that you should add a second shock to keep the lid up when opened. As you all probably know, the shock is held in place by a pin and a clip on each end.

Question is - How exactly do you install that second shock? It seems like the best way would be put the second shock on the outside of the hinge, and secure the whole thing with a longer pin that goes through both shocks. Where can I find such a pin? Or do people use a simple bolt/nut combo from the hardware store to do this?

The PO did this on my car. I think they just used a long bolt and nut instead. But you could also get a longer pin and clip if you want to go that route. Check out McMaster.com...they have all that stuff. But a hardware store will have it too.

I actually have Three (3) shocks on my deck lid (2 in one direction and 1 in the other! I also have no problems with it either! Long 6 MM Bolt and Nyloc Nuts and several washers to space it all out

+1 on the long bolt and nylock nut. Got mine at Home Depot.

Be advised the setup you're after will eventually end in a warped lid. If you don't mind, I suggest buying a used RH hinge from a turbo (or fab and weld a comparable tab to your hinge) and buy the RH shock strut and other minutiae from Pelican. I found this to be a much better solution. As a bonus, I found the engine lid lifts quite a bit higher using the factory solution.

Look at the fire wall on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It should have an unused "U" shaped bracket just like where the shock mounts on the driver's side. If so, order the bracket that welds onto the passenger side hinge, it is an OEM part. Remove the hinge and weld the bracket into position. Paint and reinstall the hinge. Keep track of where the shims go. Also order 2 new shocks (it is best to match-up shocks side to side) and a second set of pins, hardware, etc. Install the 2 new shocks, one on each side. You are done. The decklid will open evenly unlike the dual shock solution and it will be factory correct.

Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I thought the factory-setup for carreras with spoilers was two shocks on the same side?

That is not correct. Capt. Carrera and I are describing the factory setup. The tab is available from our host or as the Capt. suggests you can use a Turbo hinge.

Good Idea about both sides, One thing for sure, I never push down on the right side to close the lid. I have a clicker strut on the Hood that holds it up like the old Trunk lids back in the day! I think I am going to look around for something like this and install it in the engine compartment

This is a right side hinge from an 86 cabrio with a spoiler from the factory.
