my 3.6 conversion in my 993 conversion

Car is a 1980 993 body conversion with a 993 oil tank, Found a good deal on 48K mile 91 3.6L, so now jumping in head first on that conversion. Also talking to Aaron at Rennwerks, i'm going to install a 965 oil filter console and 944 oil filter. I ended up getting the Flywheel, wiring, oil tube and case studs from Patrick Motorsports. Ordered yesterday and it arrived today! I will be using the 993 HE's and Cat (thanks to Pelican classifieds!) since the car will have to pass Ca smog. Also picked up a Sachs Power clutch kit and new bolts, new valve cover gaskets and spark plugs, dist. belt, dist vent kit since now is the time to change it all while the engine is out! The engine should be delivered next week. For Oil cooling I ordered a Elephant Racing RSR oil cooler duct, and a big front mount oil cooler, if it is not enough, then a fender mount will be added. I'll try to post pics as I go, but I'll probably get too excited and forget to take pics!

Here's what I have so far..

I will be following you closely, as I have just started my 3.6 transplant into an early 911sc. I went the Instant-G approach, so will be interesting to see how your kit looks in relationship to the stuff I get...

Do you have any more details about the 965 oil filter console and 944 oil filter?

Interesting project by the way - good luck!

cudabnu 05-20-2010 11:59 AM

Check out Smart Racing website under the engine .pdf to see a pic of it. The 965 puts a 15 degree kick to the front of the car so it is easier to change the oil filter with the early oil hardline. Aaron from Rennwerks told me the 944 oil filter is bigger than the 993 oil filter, that the 993 oil filter was only designed to handle the flow for the cam and rockers. Mine should arrive tomorrow, and I'll get a pic posted.

Gonna be purty!

cudabnu 05-20-2010 06:39 PM

Any of you guys who have already done the conversion and have detailed pics, please share. I'm a visual kind of guy! I will try to return the favor as I do mine. This weekend I may try to start installing the DME wiring conversion from PM, any tips or suggestions? or better yet..pics!?

ZAMIRZ 05-20-2010 08:29 PM

I'm usually against the SC/Carrera to 993 conversion, but yours looks real nice.

cudabnu 05-21-2010 06:45 AM

Thanks. I wanted to do it right (all 993 glass and door window frames, all 993 interior even converted the wipers). I wanted the best of both worlds!

What do you think you will be into for ($) out the door? With this much attention to detail I would assume you would be close to the cost of purchasing a 993 and have decent resale.

cudabnu 05-21-2010 06:15 PM

Yes, by far I could have bought a nice 993 C4 by now! I haven't added it all up, and never will, must of my fun is in the build, once it is done, i'm sure i'll be looking for something else to work on.

wax105 05-22-2010 03:28 AM

Amen!

Now get to work... ;) VDubs for life!

cudabnu 05-25-2010 12:41 PM

Just got my 993 HE's from a fellow Pelican and cut the flanges on the right side to flip them so they will bolt up to the 964 3.6L

Bought a used PM throttle cable, so about the only left is the fuel system to start geting parts for. Engine was not picked up yet, so I went with another company, hopefully will be picked up today and with any luck I'll see it Friday, But Saturday I have to go to Sacramento for a VW show.

Engine arrived today! I started by taking off the power steering pump and installed the block off plate, then removed the stock bellhousing studs. Working on getting the exhaust removed next, Then I will move on to the flywheel and clutch.

cudabnu 06-02-2010 06:41 PM

Got the bellhousing studs replaced and installed the PM flywheel and pilot bearing, rear main seal looked perfect, took the plasma cutter to the bellhousing to cut it out for the magnetic pickup, then adjusted it to 1mm.

I took the engine outside and gave it a good cleaning..
Took some doing but finally got the exhaust off, only broke 2 studs, but they broke at the exhaust flange, so all will come out and new studs put in.

I need to modify the tin for the 993HE's. and then test fit the right side and weld the flanges back on in the correct position.

Also received the used PM throttle cable, so I hooked it up to the engine.

I don't think that is a 965 console, it looks like a 993. The 965 console has a 15* tilt, the 993 0*

interestingly the 965 console has a 930 part #

cudabnu 06-09-2010 07:33 AM

It is the 965, it is tilted, just hard to see at the angle, if you scroll up about 1/2 way you can see it when I first got it out of the box and took a pic on my desk. Also the 993 does not have the backing part that closes off the cylinder head cavity. It's amazing at how expensive those things have become, almost triple the price in the last 5 years!

BoxsterGT 06-09-2010 08:07 AM

:)

Looks like you need a shorter filter in order to change it w the Oil Lines in the way, or is it just the angle of the photo?

Len

:)

cudabnu 06-09-2010 08:48 AM

yea, it is currently in the way, but it will be "adjusted" to clear once the tranny is back on and the tin work is done.

Ah, I see now. sorry

Definitely use the short filter, The 2 needed for a 993 are OC 229 & OC 213, I believe that the 229 is the short one, I can remove the 229 on a 993 0* console w/o removing the oil lines

cudabnu 06-18-2010 01:48 PM

I'll have to get more pics up Monday. I modified the tin, modified the engine carrier, took off all the valve covers to do a valve job and to clean and repaint them and the engine tin, change the spark plugs, then I should be ready to install.

cudabnu 07-15-2010 07:06 AM

We'll got the engine mounting bracket modified and welded on gussets, installed the engine in the car and ran the main wiring to the DME. I had the secondary dist. cap center post looking pretty corroided so I decided to just replace both and rotors, went to twist the rotor to make sure it lokcked down, and sure enough it spins freely! Broken belt, so now I have the distributor completly apart and I am in the process of rebuilding it and trying to source some new bearings for it.

I'll have to get more pics at the house on the motor inthe car finally.

cudabnu 07-28-2010 06:25 PM

Motor is in, oil lines complete, fuel lines done (took factory ends to a local Hose place and they made me the line from the filter to the inlet for $12. Originally I used no spacers for the engine hanger but it put the engine at an angle that just didn't look right to me, so I made spacers and dropped it back down to be level with the side rails of the body.

Today, I filled it up with some BP Oil, and roughly hook up the 4 wires for the conversion wiring and fired her up for a few seconds. I won't have time until this Sat to wire it up correctly, then should be able to get her up and running and check out the oil thermostat and look for any leaks. Also have a single pulley conversion to do, but that will be done after all the bugs are worked out.

Good progress. What do you think to the CMS stuff? I have also got their side cover but not started the 915 work yet...

Do you happen to know what length your spacers were to get the engine level?

cudabnu 07-28-2010 09:21 PM

Cms is very nice
spacer is 1"

Kroggers 07-28-2010 09:43 PM

Thank you!

SO, after a brief sidetrack with the ring gear on the flywheel, motor came out, ring gear replaced, and put back in last Saturday, she fired up and sounded awesome without the 993 mufflers on! But having a problem with it at idle, it will run when I have the throttle depressed to hold the RPMS up just above 1K, but will not idle on it's own until warm. I currently have the ISV and AFM off to be cleaned, and I contacted Ingo to purchase a No Bad Days chip for the DME. While the motor was out for the ring gear I replaced the head temp sensor and the Crank position sensor.

So I'll give it a go with the cleaned parts this afternoon, and hopefully in the next day or two I'll have the chip to put in.

cudabnu 08-17-2010 10:24 AM

Now I need some brake upgrade ideas to handle the 3.6, I have 28mm rear hollow torsion bars already, front is all stock. I also have a set of weltmeister front and rear swaybars. This car will mainly be a street car with maybe 1 track day a year, but a few cruises thru the local LA mountians ;)

cudabnu 09-08-2010 01:33 PM

Front and Rear 993TT brake upgrade should be here by the end of the week. I installed my new front mount oil cooler and had some stock oil pipes cut and brazed to finish the plumbing, hopefully it will do the job with just the 1 cooler and the RSR front duct. I still need to find a piece of trim off a wrecked 993 windshield to finish my windshield conversion.

I ended up just installing my orig 915 trans (not the one in the above pic) because when the new side plate and 930 bearing were installed and bolted up, there was too much force need to turn the output shafts to my liking. So I will send the one pictured above to be gone thru and adjusted correctly, then install it someday....

My idle problem ended up being a missing hose clamp to 1 of the breather hoses that go into the top of the 993 oil tank. So once I got that taken care of, she fired right up and started to idle nicely.
Next it took all but 15 minutes to install the NBD chip. I still can't drive it until I get the brakes finished and install the 930 master cylinder.

I still need to make a bracket to support the 993 mufflers, although I think I liked the sound much better when it was just the cats!.

I also need to modify the 964 rear tin to bolt the 993 heater crossover tube up to since the rest exhaust heater parts are 993.

Once the mechanicals are done, then it's back to the painter to finish the bodywork, then onto the streets of So Cal!

cudabnu 09-23-2010 11:10 AM

Few more pics, 993TT brakes are on, just need 6mm spacers in the rear, and longer caliper bolts in front, then install a 930 master cylinder.

cudabnu 09-14-2011 09:25 AM

Figured I've give an update to my project.... Car has been back at the painters getting re-painted, when I got the hood and few other bits back, the color was a shade or two off so it went back to my buddy who did all the paintwork on this and my show VW convertible. As painting is his P/T filler job when his real work of surveying slows down, this has been put on the back burner, but he said it is now finished and should be delivered Sat.

Trany:
I tried to put the CMS side plate and 930 bearing on, but the preload needs to be pre-set, So I'm going to have CMS go thru it, install a 1 piece bearing retainer and a Wavetec TBD for good measure, and have them drill and tap the case to install a cooler.

cudabnu 11-14-2011 09:25 AM

915 is back from CMS and looks great! Car should be back this week, been nothing but delays from my painter, but he's a good friend so I can't complain too much, plus I still need to clean the garage out to put it in! Once I get the car back, I'll get more pics up. Also got some Focal speakers and Alpine CD player and amps to install.
