CV joints

I understand there is a gasket on each CV joint . Is it inboard or outboard of the ball bearing cage ?

The gaskets go between the CV joint and the gearbox or wheel flange.

I hope that answers your question.

Meanwhile our local Porsche independent workshop doesn't bother fitting these any more.
The salesman told me this when I tried to buy some. I asked why not and the mechanic standing next to him said they're "over kill". So not needed.

I've been running without ever since. Close to 5 years with no problems.

Been decades without them and haven't had any problems either.

I ordered the gaskets along with the CV rebuild kit (boots, grease and clamps ) for my 89 when i replaced the boots last Summer and they're still in my toolbox...
There were none in the first place when i took the axles apart !

Cheers !

Reason I stopped using them, they always broke just trying to fit them on the CV's.

The one other problem associated with the CV gaskets is compression. When you torque your bolts to spec, the gasket crushes. Apparently, they collapse a bit more in time loosening your bolts. You can re-torque after 100 to even 500 miles and find bolts not up to spec.

Metal to metal would seem to be the answer. Not that you shouldn't still check them.

Use new serrated washers each time.
