'76 911 Coupe rear seat belts

Hi,

My '76 Coupe has no rear seat belts fitted - that make me uncomfortable as my kids will be traveling in the rear.

I think the rear belts for a '76 coupe would have been static lap belts? Is that right?

Are the mountings already in the car?

Do I just need to buy a kit from Porsche to fit them?

Any ideas on part numbers please?

All advise gratefully received

Cheers

Buzz

My 78 SC doesn't have rear seat belts. I think lap belts were installed a couple of years later. I do know that some people retrofit them into the earlier years.

My 84 has lap belts, and I wish it had shoulder belts so I could consider putting my kids there.

You should be able to install lap belts fairly easily. Shoulder belts will be more of a problem. If you look at the photo below, of a '77 chassis, you'll see attachment points for lap belts. Unfortunately, Porsche didn't include mounts for shoulder belts in that era and some cutting and welding of the rear bulkhead would be required to install those properly. I'm sure you can buy new belts from Porsche, if you want, or buy a set of used belts from some of the guys on this forum.

I had a 75 911 and the anchor points where in the car already. Just picked up a set of belts from a mid 80s and installed them.

Also worth a note: investigate Canadian cars as they had 3 point system in the coupes in the late 80s. I think you could possible even find a stock option for a 3 point system for a coupe or targa from a Canadian car.

The later cars did have mounts for a shoulder belt. Some of the early cars (1960's) also had mounts in the rear bulkhead that could be used for a shoulder belt. Sadly, a '76 did not.

Some people have cut the mounts out of a suitable donor car and welded them in. I think a pair of lap belts is a more practical solution. Not as safe, but then any modern car is safer than an old 911 anyway.

I'm also willing to install a new 3-point rear seat belt system on my 1976 911S for the safety of my 5 year old son and do not mind doing some welding if required.
I'll also check if the front ones need to be replaced and get a full kit.

Let us know what you decide to do. My 76 has anchor points that I used to tie down a car seat but he will be out of that shortly.
