oil covered CV
was getting car inspected today by non-porsche shop and the guy noticed that the right CV was coated in oily grime..he suggested that there is a seal where the CV meets the transmission
is there a seal and is this an expensive fix for a porsche shop to do? any other thoughts. dont have time to post a photo just now but maybe later my initial thought is, how much tranny fluid has leaked....but i have no way to get under car safely at the moment to check

Replacing the axle shaft seal is pretty straight forward.
The grime could also be a torn CV boot that is leaking CV grease. Either way, a good Porsche shop should be able to fix this for you in under an hour. ![]()

If it's transmission fluid and has been leaking for 4 years, your transmission will be low on oil by now. Drain the rest of the oil and check the drain plug for metal shavings, replace the seal and fill it up with new oil. If it's CV grease, you could blow up the (now dry) CV. Don't just re-pack it with grease, take out the balls and inner race and check for excessive wear due to running dry. The balls should go back into the same groove, so mark them before removal. ![]()

I would say the gasket for the CV joint to the flange is bad not the trans seal. I live near Saratoga. Where do you live?

Rochester
so does that mean its likely trans fluid or CV grease if it turns out to be the gasket as you say

bad gasket means CV grease leaking out
is there spray anywhere above? I'd be tempted to clean it off well, check the torque on the bolts & see what happens after a drive. |

there isnt much spray anywhere. i cant reach the bolts...i dont have stands or a jack...but i might be able to clean it....though if all the grease is gone i wouldnt expect to see much of anything
i wont drive much until i get it into the shop i guess

stands will save you some $$ down the road; you can - carefully- use the emergency jack that came with the car to put it on stands
for now, just drive to the shop if you don't hear any noises |
