Best Websites for 87-89 911's
I am wondering which websites you all feel would be the best for searching for an 87-89 911 Coupe. I am located in the midwest (St. Louis to be exact) and have not had much luck in finding any examples of these models to look at.
Thanks in advance for any info. I really enjoy reading the posts on this bbs and have learned quite a bit. (Especially for a long time British Car guy!) |

When I started looking (for my '87), my first priority was to buy from an enthusiast. In this age of car, some of them are hitting the expensive years and you want one that was a) well cared for and b) had the big stuff (e.g. Clutch) done already.
My first stop would be your local PCA chapter - their newsletter should have classified listings from members, and the car will be local. Second are referrals to reputable local garages. Often they will know of customers contemplating selling their cars - due to PPI's or acquisition of a second PCar. Next are the Pelican BBS and the Rennlist. I actually found mine on the Rennlist classified. As the PO was an active member of the local PCA, it fit under my rule 1. Good Luck and Happy Hunting! Don

I would say the classified of Panorama always has some nice sounding cars,(low miles, good prices). If you can find one close to you it is a start. Unfortunatly those adds need to be in at least a month prior so sometimes the car is gone before that. I found mine through the local chapters PCA newsletter, it was an 89 with 49,000k. My brother located his at a local used car dealer, an 87 with 105,000k. His car was far cheaper because of the condition, but this was not an issue since we are prepping this for track use. One other avenue is to find a person you trust who has access to high line auctions. You can give him the model and year and if one appears he could bid for you. There is some risk involved here, since you won't be able to inspect the car before purchase. This should fall on the dealership. By far the easiest is a individual who is selling his car. Keep looking in the classifieds. I still do every day and I'm not even in the market anymore. Just a habit.

It was tough finding an 87-89 I was looking for a few months when I happened to chat with another p-car owner who picked up a weissach edition. I asked, where he saw the ad and he replied yahoo classifieds. I use yahoo everyday but didn't even think of their classified (not auction). The next day I went to yahoo and scanned the list.....found mine locally. I just looked on yahoo and there is currently over 700 p-cars for sale nationwide. Enter your city and state and the site will give you the classifieds closest to you. You can also hit the "nationwided" button.
I am not stating that the yahoo classifieds is the best way, merely one way to find out what's out there. The previous posts are excellent ways to finding a p-car. I also came across some other classifieds on the net from doing searches for porsches using all the different search engines. Sorry, I didn't keep the list. Happy hunting!

The usual suspects:
www.autotrader.com www.rennlist.com www.germanusedcars.com autos.yahoo.com www.classifieds2000.com In addition, you can go to www.porscheclassifieds.com and search a bunch of sites at once. You tend to pull up a lot of stuff from luxcarnet and hemmings though (luxcarnet is overpriced and some have reported less-than-stellar experiences...in addition almost all of the cars advertised there can be found in other sources). If you join PCA (www.pca.org), you can access their online classified ads. I would avoid dealers when looking for '87-'89 cars. You often don't get a complete history of the car, and in general you find these cars at independent dealers with limited experience in p-cars (and most I've seen have been pretty beat). Also, many of these dealers will not allow a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) which is pretty much mandatory when buying one of these cars. If you get a good one, your maintenance costs will be reasonable. If you get a bad one, you will be bleeding serious money. |

Reenlist. I bought my latest on that site and found that they have some good cars listing with them. But buying long distance requires that you do your homework. Use the local PCA of the cars' location to help set up the PPI and get recommends. They might even know the car. Good Luck. Too bad about McGuire calling it quits! DT

Don't forget http://www.pmletter.com I realize it's not really a site, and that you have to pay for the subscription ($55). But there are usually a vast amount of Porsches and parts advertised. Sometimes there are even great articles...
