Horny Horn
I got a quirky one
My horn goes off.. works a treat. Rather too well ........far too well!!!!! like all the time I thought it was the boot on the rear of the horn pad and it’s gone a bit hard even though it’s only 5 years old.. So I changed that.. I also took the pin out the wheel and cleaned it of old grease and filed the contact to make it new again, Put it all back together and it’s ok ish but it was soon back to it's old ways... What happens is you drive over a bump and the horn goes off, normally I would have said the horn pad is loose and you need to change it but it is not lose and I have no need to change it as the one in there is new. So I took it off ( the horn pad ) and drove home after beeping at every one as I went along.. Anyway with the horn pad off I turned the corner and the horn went again!!! So anything to look for, any one else had this.. I am now looking at the wire though the rack to see if that is damaged or broken in some way and shorting out.. as the horn feed is always live so have to find this plus it’s not good having no horn.. ![]()

I'm guessing you have a 912? I don't see a model year or number in your post, which might be helpful. I do know that if you have a unwanted ground on a '75, the horn will go off. Constantly. Because you had some success when removing the wheel and cleaning everything, I'd start with that again. Remove the wheel and start to look very, very closely at all your wires associated with the horn and horn pad plus contact on the steering wheel. My horn ground happened to be a brown wire, yours may or may not be brown, but if there is wear, anywhere on this wire and it contacts anything metal, your horn will sound. There are a lot of little screws an other potential grounding points back there, so look very closely.
After that, you'll have to look for other grounds in the system, elsewhere in the car, but start by taking the steering wheel of first and looking in that area. I think this is where you will find your problem. Good luck. --- Tom '75 targa |

Hey Mark, how`s it going. I had this problem, solved it by taking the pin out, wrapping a bit of insulating tape around the plastic body and popping it back in again. Not altogether sure why that would work.. but it did.
Actually, thinking about it, I used masking tape off the drawing board. Any other highly technical solutions required, just ask. ![]() Going to Le Mans ? Cheers, Mike.

Mine went off because the screws on the horn pad were loose. Also make sure the pin is not damaged and your brown ground wire is secure,

Thanks I will start and take it all apart it's not a bad idea anyway as I have some play on the steering wheel and I want to try and fix that at the same time..
I will check all the above Mike , Hi no I am not going to Le Mans this time, was good when we all went but things change and that.. Still plodding about but doing my own thing.. I had that Mercedes which was a treat to drive about the w108 till I had a problem this weekend with it.. so head in that engine bay also now , oh joy. ![]()

Sorry for stealing the topic, but I'm looking for that round rubber behind the horn pad. Mine is completely dry and crumbling. Does anyone know what's that part number? Many Thanks José

Mercantile international have them I know I have bought about 4 off him over the years for different cars
OK update I took the wheel off and found that the brass ring plate was lose and I thought we had it but no.. I also found the 3 screws lose on the back of the horn pad and they were lose and no still does it.. I noted I had a spring washer missing off the back of the wheel and spring so I will locate that some where. Also going to look deeper in and check this ground wire you say about as it's the next on the list.. I had to discontect the horn conectors but I can hear the replay clicking like mad as I drive so it does seam to around the steering wheel area? I will also be looking at where the relay is also.. we will get there I am sure. ![]()

The split ring bushing is NLA but Mich Leyland is making a replacement that will soon be in the catalog (1969-1973 split ring steering bushing).
