SSI exchangers
I have a 78SC that I'm replacing heat exchangers with SSI. I've run into a problem and need your help. I still have the smog pump lines intact and the solid metal oil line when install hits the SSI. With it in place I'm unable to mount SSI because the pipe is on the way. The other problem I mount the SSI (with out the oil) and the clutch arm helper spring hits the exchanger. I was told I need to adjust this spring to mount the SSI but Project 101 has no write-up on how to do this. Has anyone done this project on there MY78 that can help? Do I have the wrong SSI and or metal oil line?

rotate the oil line closer to the trans and bend down (or up) that flange on the heat exchanger and hammer it flat to clear the spring. the arm and spring need to come back all the way to the stop.

I have rotated and or bend the oil line but still no clearance for the SSI to mount. Is it necessary to remove the smug pump line? My concern hammering it flat is the seems might break and could leak. |

if the air pump line interferes with getting the oil line out of the way, it would have to go. most folks remove the whole works and plug the holes in the heads with 1/8" pipe plugs. if you need to keep the system, maybe remove just the offending section and plug that one hole.
grab the lip with visegrips and start the bend, then hammer it flat to clear the spring. just the area where the spring needs to go. done tons of them and never split one yet.

rluvsbenz, as you are new here, you might not know that John Walker is one of the boards resident experts with craploads of experience. If he says hammer it, you hammer it.
Good luck!
