CV Bolt Removal - Transmission out of car!

Hey all -

I dropped my engine last weekend. We were having a lot of trouble removing the CV Joints from the transmission - so we removed wheel side to get the job done.

Now I have a transmission out of the car with my the CV Joints still attached.

Any suggestions on how to hold the axles still while trying to remove the bolts?

Try a DIY penetrating oil concoction of 50% acetone 50% ATF. It worked wonders on mine.

Also, an impact wrench should do the trick. Tough little buggers.

Good luck.

Without knowing what tools you have available; looks to be a two man job from here on out. Soak the bolts repeatedly with PB blaster penetrating oil. After a day or so, apply oxy/acy heat to the bolt head and remove. Be sure to use a quality allen socket and seat the allen wrench all the way to the bottom of the bolt.
Hope this helps

Use two (2) long bolts that will go through the outer CV joint hole/s. Use these bolts to counter hold the rotation of the axle with a long bar while trying to loosen the inner CV bolts. A good impact wrench is very helpful and if you stripped the bolts, chisel the CV bolts to get them out.

BTW, lightly hammer the allen wrench into the CV bolts to make sure that it is properly seated before applying torque. You could easily strip the bolt/s. Keep us posted.

Success!

I put the axle in a big old vice and was able to remove the CV Joint Bolts using a standard allen wrench on my socket on one side and had to use an Irwin Bolt Extractor on the other side for most of the bolts.

The bolt remover was awesome! And really made the job easier. You just tap it on and it grips the bolts well.

Here's a link:
Irwin Industrial Tools 394001 BoltGrip Bolt Extractor Base Set 5Piece

Everything is out - now it is time to get the transmission rebuilt, replace the clutch, and to start putting things back together.
