Guys, thanks for all the quality information, this project is now officially on my, ‘must do’ list for next year.
Merry Christmas |
If you want to hide the MSD box it will fit behind the rear seats and trim on the firewall. The seats will still work.
|
Mount it on the firewall (but closer to the CDI side of the engine bay or else the leads will not reach thier new homes). and you will hardly notice it.
Mount it low down, almost touching the bulkhead bit down there. If you like a bit of flash, check out Cam's pimpy mounting. We helped each other install each one, so been there , done that on available spaces for MSD. Unit is boss. Will ignite our rich running MFI's well. I agree, you need to get it a bit rich to get good transition response; leaning out the idle mixture will certainly lead to a noticable flat spot. I'm really happy with my MSD. I imagine the earlier carbed cars will like them even more. I did NOT need a tach adaptor with a straight out 6A box. Use the Blaster High Vibration coil, destickered if you want a less rice look. Stock Bosh box is useful to hold up at dinner parties to show what $2000K NZ worth of outdated and unreliable Nixon-era electronics looks like to astounded gathered punters. |
I too am running a msd 6a, and would love to get rid of my points. Which units are compatible with my ignition system? My car is a 69 911t with a 77 2.7 , webers, and Bosch distributor.

I'm using a pertronix unit with my MSD 6AL.
It works very well. Good luck, David Duffield |
I just ordered a Pertronix and will be installing it by the end of the week. I am using an MSD 6A. The instructions say to wire the Pertronix just as you would wire points - with the points pickup wire (white) on the MSD, not the magnetic sensor wires.
I notice that MSD sells an optional rev limiter for the 6A that plugs into the magnetic pickup wires. I wonder if anyone has reverse engineered this? Is it a simple circuit or is there an RPM detecting microcontroller in the rev limiter box? Hmm... |
This is definitaly on my list of upgrades. Just not sure which I should do first the MSD or some RS Door Panels!
|
Jeff what model Pertronix did you get?
|
I ordered Pertronix Ignitor part #1863 from Pelican. I have my fingers crossed that this will fit my 72's distributor. Pertronix lists this model as the one for the 72-73 so lets hope they are right.
There is a new model of the Ignitor (II) which does some fancy dwell adjustment with RPM and other things but I don't think this would be helpful with an MSD or worth the extra $30. |
