I would like to upgrade my '88 Carrera to the 993 type projector headlights, HID if possible but even halogen. Anyone tried this with any success..?

I have never seen 993 projector housings placed on a 911, but I could be wrong. I think the only way to do that is to do a full 993 fender and bumper conversion. If it's been done, I'm sure someone here will chime in.
I've seen HID projectors put into the stock H4 housing, and it turned out pretty good. I think the guy who did it used the guts from an Audi A6 HID projector. The "Singer 911" also has a similar setup. Search for "singer 911" and you'll find many drool worthy pictures of it. Someone else has grafted HID headlight housings from a new Mini Cooper onto the fender of a 911. It required quite a bit of fabrication to the fender of the 911 if I recall correctly. Looks are subjective, but it looked a little odd to me, although very functional. Some folks have swapped HID bulbs and ballasts into H4 or H5 housings. While it puts out a significant amount of light, I personally feel that it is illegal for a reason. The H4/H5 housings were not designed for an HID bulb and scatter the light incorrectly causing glare for oncoming traffic. My personal preference is to just upgrade upgrade the wiring to the lights, add relays and install higher wattage bulbs. I have 80w/100w bulbs with relays in my H4's and they put out as much light (albeit a different color) than the stock HIDs in my Audi. And, it's still safe for oncoming traffic because the cutoff prevents glare. Simply upgrading to H4 headlights (as opposed to the H5's that you have) will increase the light output significantly. Also adding relays will help. Search on any of the topics mentioned and you will find a plethora of information available with pictures as examples. Good luck!

Try Chris at Turbokraft - I recall that he has a kit just for that. I think it is on his website.
