3.0 Engine Stalls when Oil Cap Removed

The bone-stock 1981 3.0 in Butters is running great - I've been terrorizing the back roads and using it as a daily driver. Had the C02 professionally set, timing checked (I already had it right etc), idle speed rock steady 950.

Car runs perfect under all conditions. Then this today...

Went to check the oil level, warm oil, engine idling, level ground. I pulled the oil cap off, and the engine stalled. Tried to restart it with the cap off - no go. Put the cap back on - fired immediately.

Repeated twice more with exactly the same results. I've had some where the RPM would drop, but stall? Why? Have I done something stupid? (I mean stupid on this particular point, I do plenty of other stupid things...)

Angela,

You are missing the vacuum restrictor thats supposed to be in the oil tank vent hose going to the airbox.

I have one if you need it.

Okay to drive it to Seattle on Monday? I could stop by on Monday and pick it up. Honestly runs perfect until I do this!

Oh my yes,... No problem at all.

Its simply frustrating to be unable to check the oil level.

Just a follow up on this post.

Thanks Steve - I put the little doohickey in and that's exactly what was wrong. It was a pleasure meeting you and talking about cars.

Butters says "thanks" too!

Steve, if Angela showed up at your shop in a different car, would you say, "I can't believe it's not Butters!"? Just askin'.

It was pleasure meeting you as well, and I'm glad that did the trick. It isn't every day that a cheap doohicky does the job,...

It may be a little doohickey, but it certainly isn't cheap!

930-107-289-00-M260

that is the PN. the M260 suffix only means it comes from a non PCNA parts distributor.

Remove the hose from the air box and insert the vacuum restrictor at the tip of the hose?

No. I think the restrictor goes at the other end of the hose... not where it connects to the air box...
