Difficulty Installing doors
I'm having difficulty installing the doors back my 1974 911 after having them sprayed. Does anyone have any suggestions on the easiest and / or proper way of installing them. Tips or tricks would be helpful, I've tried several times and the clear areas are not correct and door panel is rubbing the fender by 1/8".
Thanks so much on any suggestions. Chis |
were the fenders removed during the respray? Were the doors taken off by pulling the pins or unbolting the hinges?
It sounds like you need to remove the fenders and start the body alignment process from scratch starting with the doors. Next would be fender to door alignmnet followed by hood and bumpers. |
Yes the fenders were removed as well as the hood. This seems pretty difficult, do you know any links on proper alignment and clearances? Thanks so much you definitely opened my eyes on the complexity of the project.

trial and error and trial and error..... best advice is to mount the door with the good gap at the back of the door (door to quarter panel)... then mount the fenders and tweek a bit.. then mount the hood.. tweek a bit....

Fenders are indeed adjustable quite a bit.
If you remounted these first, you may never get the doors aligned properly. As suggested work back to front: get the door in and aligned with the rear, then align the fenders with the door ... |
The doors use aluminum shims to shif them back and/or level them. We prefer to line up the fenders first, the corner of the cowl must match the corner of the fender, and at the bottom the fender must line up with the indention of the rocker panel.

the doors are a biach. Heavy and easy to chip that new paint. Gotta get them shimmed just right.
I used a jack to help support them while I shimmed until right. Good luck Chris 73 911 E |
The way the 911 is put back together or put together is to hang the doors and fit to the rear jamb and sill. The fenders and hood follow with the hood placed correctly to the cowl. At that point, the rest of the fitting is all done with the fenders. It takes some experience to know all the tricks.
Get the rear of the doors exactly as they should be and come back to the forum. |
