Thinking of buying car in the Chicago area.

The owner says there are no rust issues that he is aware of. This is a low mileage Carrera (50K) that the owner states was not driven in the winter. I bought my Targa in the Bay Area just to avoid the rust issues. I would just hate to spend a lot of time and money to find rust peeking through a few years down the road. I plan on keeping this car a long time, should I just hold out for a southern car? Can anyone recomend a shop of a PPI in the Chicago area? Thanks!

There are probably a number of shops in the area that can do a PPI, but it would be better to narrow down the area of Chicago, in the burbs? downtown? I use Euroquipe for all my work, but they are in St. Charles (western suburb), northwest there is Fischer and Perfect Power, closer to the O'hare is Eurosport.
There is a number of other people here that I'm sure will chime in.

As Phil said, there are a number of shops in the Chicago area we can recommend. And who knows, one of us may even know the car, so fill us in on what it is. Then we can go to work on your behalf.

Just curious, what are the details on this car? Before I bought my 83sc in April, I was interested in a car in Chicago that looked very good...but after pulling a Carfax it has been totalled. If I recall this was a black Carrera that the guy recently bought out of Iowa, had new paint and sounded like a pretty cool guy. Of course, once I questioned him on the accident I never heard back from him.

I took my car to Rick Fischer for a ppi and was very pleased with his work. I have also had it back to him for some work I did not yet feel comfortable enough doing myself and found his prices, knowledge, and ethics to be great. I feel comfortable to recommend his shop!

I wish you luck with your search!

As a vendor, I can back up what you have just said about Rick and his business. He is one of the most diligent shops that I sell to. He asks a lot more questions than other people and if he's ever in the least bit unsure about something he calls back and asks more questions. Usually it's because he wants to make sure he completely and properly educates the customer of what's going on with their gearbox work.

After working with him for half a dozen years I can tell you he approachs it this way because he cares and wants to give the customer the best product he possibly can. He's not happy if it's not right. It's an approach to business that is dying off in this industry and Rick's a stellar example of how to be customer-centric. I consider him a very valuable dealer of our products because of this.

Okay, this Red 87 911 is located in Rolling Meadows Illinois and the ebay item number is 120575020958 (auction ended). When I bought my Targa eight years ago it seemed like every 911 for sale here had rust near the windows, threshold or door jamb, or under the smile. In other words they were northern cars and that was why they were for sale. Now I'm thinking about trying to buying a car in Illinois . I've never lived in the northern states but I've seen what happens to cars there. Is it reasonable to expect a summer only car to be rust free? I hate rust and if I bought a car and found even minimal surface rust I would turn it immediately even at a loss. Rust never sleeps. Thanks for all of the replies!

Car looks nice, with minor problems typical of a 20+ year old car. I wouldn't worry about Chicago winters if the car never got driven in bad weather. Most of my friends out here garage their cars for the winter and they're all in great shape.

Let me know if you want me to take a look at it for you. I'd be interested to see the car anyway.
