How do you get chrome off and restore Fuchs to normal
 

well looks like my PO took the chicken way out and chomed the lips so he wouldnb't have to polish all the time...

I am assuming so because I can see some bubbling on the inside rim...

so how can I get this crap off..I would liek to have the polished finish if not the original adonized finish...

Any ideas?

chrome comes off the same way it goes on. they just reverse the polarity. the pits will look even worse with the chrome off. hopefully they're saveable.

That's a coincidence...I've lined up a set of 7's and 8's for my 78 SC, and they're chromed and pitted too. The cost of stripping the chrome is minimal (I've been quoted $100 for all 4) and the one guy I spoke to says the remaining pits shoud be polishable.

Let us know what the result of the de-chroming is if you go that route. I have the same issue for my 89 targa. The rims are 6" and 8" and have the lips chromed. They still look in a pretty good shape but I would prefer to go back to stock. If you use the de-chroming, would the black anodized center be affected and would need to be re-anodized? I would be very curious to see what the options are, the results, and how much it cost. The suggestion I have gotten so far is to find somebody who likes chrome lips and trade rims.

After clear anodizing the entire wheel, Fuchs centers are painted black.

I see that you're in L.A. Bring your Fuchs to Al Reed Polishing in Anaheim. He can remove the chrome and polish the lips to a mirror like finish. Don't know the cost of de-chroming, but polishing lips and repainting center black cost me $50./wheel. (cheap!).

well I will have time to put my car up on stands and can do without wheels for a little biit...maybe after the new years...

Heard Al Reed has a 'loaner' set of fuchs for use while he's working on your wheels. I didn't need to take advantage of this offer, but thought you might be interested.

If you want to go stock and have them re-anodized, Harvey Weidman of Weidman's wheels does superb work. My 8x16s were pitted and curb rashed and now they look better than new. He does it right and will hand paint your center caps as well. Turnaround time was reasonable as well, even from coast to coast.

It wasn't the cheapest way to go, but the results were worth it, especially considering what a used set of 8s or 9s go for nowadays.
