allen key to remove targa top?

The targa top removal handles are missing from my '77 911. I was told that a certain size Allen key would work just as well. Does anyone do this? If so, what size? Thanks.

i don't think so. the targa handles i have are an open socket that fits over the opening mechanism like you would put a socket on your ratchet.

they are parallelogram shaped, not square. you may be able to open and close with a socket and wrench, but that would probably ruin it over time. if i were you i would go get two new handles, as it is easier to open and close when done in unison. they can't cost that much.

Thanks, but is your's a 77? The way I recall the tool is an L-shaped wrench with a pin protruding through the leg of the L that is inserted into the receptacle.

No way do you have to turn pre-'90 Targa handles simultaneously! And, the last handles that were being sold are not even designed to be left in place -- apparently as an anti-theft measure they have much longer shanks than the originals, and, in fact, look awful ... sticking out 1" more than the original handle!

You could very easily do fine with just one handle stored in the glove compartment. They are kind of pricey!!!

Warren...Thanks. They are Cdn$40 here, plus the sockets in the top itself are broken. I think that happened when the previous idiot...er, owner...used pliers or something similar to pry it off. I am taking the top apart and then taking it to a friend who owns a machine shop in town to see if he can duplicate the parts and make me a wrench. Whole thing might cost $40!

Also, I tried to access your world-famous list of essentials when making a road trip, but it wasn't there. COuld you repost?

Thanks.
