alt. replacement

I plan on replacing my altenator. Is there anything particular that I should look out for? Is it pretty straight forward?

Dead easy - cover your rear panel as you will need to manipulate the fan / alternator out.

Check position of air diverter before taking out and replace in the same way

Make sure you don't lose the shaft key - how did I think of that!

Remove the alternator from the housing by drilling a shaft clearance hole in a piece of 4 x 1 timber and screwing the alternator bolt onto it - obvious when you see it

Don't overtighten the housing strap when you replace - I had no problems but I've heard you can distort housing which can catch the fan.

Don't think about polishing the housing and / or painting teh fan while they are apart - it can be addictive!

Good Luck

Roy

That is one smart looking engine bay!
I guess that you've had the engine out to detail it like this?

Also how long has the fan been painted, I heard that most any pain/polish/finish on the fan and housing quickly gets dirty and/or tarnished.

Great looking car.

Thanks Rob

Not an engine out job - just a gradual improvement on a decent base. Car has 94000 on so is used regularly. Fan is painted and you can see signs of degradation at the leading edge - some due to bad prep. This has occurred after about 3000 miles. Housing just polished - reasonably easy to keep clean.

I cover engine when washing which prevents water marks but it keeps clean when running.

Basically I just love the car so like to look after it!
