Removing voltage regulator from alternator

Hi folks, I have searched the threads on voltage regulators but have not found an answer to my problem. I am replacing the VR on my '83SC and have the fan housing plus alternator removed from the car. The Bentley manual says to slide the VR away from the shaft and then pull out. Having removed the two bolts that hold in the VR I cannot get the VR to slide away from the shaft. It pulls straight out about 1/8 inch and then is stuck. Does the alternator have to be removed from the fan housing to remove the VR? Everything I have read suggests it does not have to be but then printed material has been wrong before. Thanks in advance, John

John,
I had a near of a time getting mine out too. I did it last year and I recall it being an SOB to get out but I finally got it out. Be patient.

I just found this thread that suggests removing the alternator from the housing to I will give that a try. Cheers, John
