Oil change

This weekend I changed my oil and went from a 15W-40 HDEO oil to BP 20W-50 and repllaced my old SWEPCO with new in my transmission after 30,000 miles of faithful service.

Maybe it is just me but I see higher oil pressures, my transmission seems to work better, and my bald spot is going away.

Is this real or just a placebo effect. Inquiring minds want to know...

Pressure = Yes
Trans = Maybe
Bald spot = NO ( or now your eyeglasses need replacing )

I think this is what is known as the "slippery slope"

I doubt the trans really works better. But the oil pressure is a sure thing.

Did you rub some of the old swepco on your bald spot, or was it the 15W-40? This really would help in answering that question.

Oil consumption also will drop along with any small leaks you may have.

Different oils can give diff pressure readings, for sure. And, I would think new oil v. old oil might do the same thing.

For the trans - 30K is quite a few miles, IMO, on the old fluid. I think fresh fluid could make a noticeable difference in feeling.

on the bald spot, i just rubbed some swepco in and will let you know in the morning.

I saw my oil pressure literally LEAP when I switched from Castrol 20/50 to synthetic Royal Purple 20/50, enough that it concerned me for a while. It will clear 100 by several needle widths now on start up, and at cruising sits about 2 needle's width above 60, where as before it would be pegged at 60 pretty much all the time.
As far as the bald spot, if you're not too far gone, Saw Palmetto can work to help stop the loss. It's used for prostate issues, by binding with DHT. DHT also happens to be the hormone "by product" that cause a lot of MPB, so the SW is pulling double duty.

20W50 this time of year in Portland? Hm....................?

15W40 would be more suited, IMHO.

Group therapy may help with anxiety over bald-spots; silent prayers don't.

I decided years ago that, if it doesn't want to grow, alright; I'll help it along by cutting it all off with the horse-clipper; saves a lot of haircut-money.

No ear ring though.

Thanks guys. In the winter you need to grab your fun whenever it happens.

As far as 20-50 vs 15-40. We rarely see temps below freezing (and I do not drive the P-car in those low temps) so the heavier oil is a minor annoyance.

Yes I probally went way to long on my tranny oil but out of sight/out of mind. Happily when I drained the oil, all I saw was magnetic metal mush on the magnet.

Except for what dripped on my head, no oil was rubbed into the cranium area. No anxiety over my bald spot. After all I saw it coming since it matches my dads at a similar age.

Coast-Oregon.

Other than some very hot summer months, I go with 15W40 Diesel Spring/Fall here in BC.

Always impressed how the buses and trucks keep running year-round with Rotella-T and rarely rebuild engines before 250k Miles.

Update

I finally had to add a quart of oil to my enigne after 1,600 miles. With the former HDEO, it was every 800 miles or so. Something good is going on.

My transmission still feels just fine but I am not going to tear it apart to verify, just drive and enjoy.

As far as my bald spot, it seems to still be the same size.

BP will be happy someone is buying there product .... and not sopping it up of off a beach

tranny ... definitely does make a difference, just did mine a few months back

bald spot, after working in garage run you hands thru the hair you have left prior to washing up .... the grease will mask the shine and make the hair stand up and appear thicker and full of body.

Please, BP ++> B(rad) P(enn) NOT B(ritish) P(etroleum).

Thanks about the hair tip but the blue cast really puts my wife off.
