Door Stop Repair-Dumb Question
I am in the process of installing new door stops and reinforcement kits in my '88 911. No surprise the passenger door is not damaged and the reinforcement kit and new stop went in easily. Driver's door was pretty bad. After removing the door panel and the door post pin....the stop just fell back into the door bolts and all. The surprise was to find the piece in the picture bolted to the door stop. It looked home-made to me until I looked at the photos on page 181 of 101 Projects for Your Porsche.....left photo in number 3...there it is in front of the old style stop. Now My Dumb Question: Should this piece be put back in the door between the inside reinforcement and the stop?.....or is it a piece from an older model used in an attempt to repair? I could not tell by looking at the photos. Thanks.

This piece was orginally tack welded to the inside of the door sheet metal where the stop pushes through. It allows both increased strength for the stop to attach but more importantly an additional flex point for the door and stop. This piece broke off mine as well and I put it back in place with JB Weld epoxy and put in the reinforcement kit. This "fix" is failing again (5 yrs of good service) and I will tack weld the piece in this time. And then repaint/touchup.
