Big puff off white oil-smoke at start-up

I parked on a significant slope (may be 10*) tilted to the passenger side for a few hours yesterday. Started it up and a big white puff smelling like oil came pouring out for about 3 seconds. I started it up few times since with out a trace of smoke as usual - including this morning from its usual parking spot. I has to be a fluke

Would parking like this cause oil to seep past the rings on the drivers side and into the cylinders?

From my experience, what you posted is not unusual.

I occasionally see the exact same thing on my '84. I don't worry because I use less than a quart of oil every 1000 miles. If I was seeing the puff and using a lot of oil I'd probably be thinking about a valve guide problem.

Happens to me every time I park on a slant and my oil tank is full. Embarrassing, but no cause for alarm as long as it's just on start-up and you aren't using much oil between changes.

That is reassuring as my '73 911T that I've owned less than two weeks has done that twice - all on a slight grade. No oil usage that I can measure in about 750 miles.

Porsche Crest Sign of...

Paranoia, get use to it. I'm still experience it after a year. The confidence in your car will build up with time even though you might encounter problems. But thanks to this site, it will be overcome.

My fresh 82 will do that from time to time on perfectly flat surfaces. I might use 1/4 of 1 quart per 3000 miles. And no smoke during acceleration or deceleration. Seems to be pretty common for our air cooled flat 6s. I am guessing that a slight bit of oil gets past the rings while sitting?

On the way back from a car show this afternoon, I had my Mustang buddy in my rear view mirror (where they belong), and ask him if he saw any smoke during acceleration (he had to use binoculars...) or deceleration.

Much to his chagrin, he had to say no
