Tail Light Housing Wire Harness Differences

I have an '81 911 (RoW) and acquired some tail light housing wire harnesses from an '88 (USA). I noticed the pins aren't exactly the same. One of them moved to the center on the '88. I was able to plug them in and everything seemed to work.

Can anyone tell me what that pin is for and if it's ok to use the new harness. I tried to look at the wire diagrams, but it still wasn't clear to me.
