Getting a shop to smog your car in CA?

Is it legal to get a shop to take your car through smog in CA?

I've had conflicting answers on this.

Thanks in advance.

I have had my independent Audi shop take my car to be smogged after replacing the defuncts cats...

Not exactly sure what you mean but I'll offer my own experience. If your car is the 1986, no doubt you get the "TEST ONLY" requirement on your registration. That means that it can only be certified at a test only station which cannot perform repairs on the car. It does not preclude you from having a repair shop work on your car, set it up and take it to a test only station for testing. Shops that both repair and do smog checks cannot certify your car--they must be classified as TEST ONLY by the state.

Don't know if that's what you wanted, but it may help.

A clarification: I was told that CA no longer allows you to pay a mechanic to take your car through smog; and moreover that there's a huge fine for doing so if caught.

I couldn't find any info re this on the DMV's website.

What difference does it make who takes the car to the smog test station? It's the car being smogged, not the driver.

6 months ago when my car was last smogged, my shop took it in for me. Nothing sneaky intended--it was just more efficient that way with my schedule.

It seems like a good idea to take it to the right place at least. My RoW 1980 911SC got crushed (for equipment) at a Test Only who was all over it for some reason. Called me out for equipment even checked that I had "modified the vacuum lines" and refused to tell me what me meant by that. Long ugly story, but either take it to a place recommended or hope to get lucky with a clueless inspector.

I agree. But I was told (by someone who knows about these things) that CA no longer lets your mechanic take the car to be tested.
