3.0 vs. 3.2 exhaust compatability?

Will a 89 3.2 stock exhaust (from exhaust port to muffler tip) bolt up to a 78 SC motor?

Conversely, will SSI's that fit a 78 SC bolt up to an 89 3.2?

I'm unclear on the thick/thin flange issue with the SSI's and wondering if the geometry and spacing of the exhaust port studs is the same for both engines.

I'm considering taking the SSI's and sport muffler off of a 78 3.0 and swapping it with the stock heater boxes/cat/single in/out muffler from an 89 3.2 Are these compatible and will either exhaust work on either engine?

SSI's from the '78 will bolt up to the 3.2, but the 3.2 has longer studs for the thick flanges. I recall that there are a few studs that will be too long to work with the thin flanges of the early SSI, but it's just a matter of removing the studs and replacing with shorter ones, or taking a Dremel to the ones that are too long and shorten them 2 or 3 threads.

Conversely, the thick flange HE's from the 3.2 will align with the SC just fine, but the studs will all be too short to be able to bolt up the thick flange. All the studs need to be removed to install longer studs, and after 32 year of being on the car, there's a high likelihood that you'll break a few of them. The alternative is a lot of heat to pull the old studs out. Oh, and the 3.2 heat exchangers have port extensions- a piece that extends up into the exhaust port. I don't know if they'll physically fit up into the port of an early 3.0.

But the SSI's will nicely wake up the Carrera.

Oh, and don't forget that to "backdate" the Carrera to the SSI's, you need to purchase 2 oil lines since the Carrera oil lines will interfere. But those backdated lines should be on the SC so take those too.
