What would you keep?
Bought a Euro 78 911 SC with 73,000 miles. Broke down motor to service and do upgrades I've read here about. Mechanic said everything measured within spec but crankshaft. So in my search for a crankshaft I ended up buying a complete motor, off an 82 SC. The guy missed a shift, 5th to 1st, and decided to upgrade to a 3.2. I took a gamble and bought motor from speed shop. It was complete with csi, oil cooler, and exhaust system. I had mechanic break down the new motor and low and behold gamble paid off, crankshaft was well within spec. Actually the only thing wrong with motor was one exhaust valve broke , and cam shafts were a little rough.
Finally my question: What parts should I keep as insurance? The few parts that were no brainers: Carerra chain tensioners. Turbo valve covers. Pistons/Cylinders I would like to try and recoup some of the money I spent by selling motor but are there any parts I should keep as spares? Thanks |
I would use the 9.3 pistons in the 78 motor vs. 8.5 of the 78. Cams are the same so if one set is rough put the rough set away.

Pistons/cylinders are different, sell the non-euro set
CIS is the same I believe, but fuel head is different so sell the non-euro head or have it rebuilt to Euro spec Dizzy can be rebuilt and recurved, keep US as spare Cams can be reground to custom spec chain ramps, use best ones match rod/piston weights, sell left-overs Race in PCA Stock D :D |
keep the euro cis, more reliable. sell the 82 cis
use your heads, bigger ports. send the bad cam off to regrind to custom spec, sell the good cam unless you want to use the stock cam. sell both exhaust systems and buy SSI's. keep the oil cooler, alternator you will have a nice motor, 9.3 comp, large port heads and euro cis. |
Thanks for the advise. Who would you use to have cams reground? How much does that cost? Is that a big upgrade over stock?
