License Bracket Question

I have just purchased front and rear license plate brackets from Vertex. I was told they were stock units made to work on 74+ 911s. I have a 73, but I ordered them anyway. One of the brackets is completely flat, and one of the brackets is angled. Which one them is for the front of the car, and which one is for the rear? I assume that the angled one is for the rear, with the angle at the bottom? Does anyone know what in the heck I am talking about? Any help would be appreciated!

My guess is that the angled bracket is for the front as it attachs to the valence panel under the bumper and that panel angles in as it goes down towards the lip spoiler (if you have one). The flat bracket is for the rear, and mounts to the central flat part of the bumper between the license plates lights.

I'm sure you can get these 74 & later brackets to work on a 73 & earlier car with a little ingenuity. -doug

The flat rear bracket ought to work fine with your 73. Reproductions of the original early front bracket are available from Doc & Cy's. I believe that Tweeks also sells them. The price, if I recall correctly, is around $25. Rather than modify the wrong front bracket, it may be easier to return it and go with the correct part. Just my opinion.

I have to look at them a bit more this weekend when I install them. I am supposed to have a front bracket and a rear bracket. I just don't know which one goes where. I have an "S" front spoiler, so it looks like the flat one goes on the front and the angled one on the back...

The original angled brackets for the pre 74 cars were for the standard front bumper. The brackets were angled because of the curve in the front bumper. I would presume that the same is true for the 74 cars. So, the angled bracket that you have is most likely intended for the front bumper of the later cars.

The rear panel between the bumperettes of your 73 is almost perpendicular to the ground, so it would take the flat bracket.

You have an "S" front spoiler which is more nearly perpendicular than the standard, curved front bumper. You might be better served by using a flat bracket on both the front and rear bumpers. By the way, those flat brackets are universal parts and are available in any auto parts store for about $2 - $3 each.

John, thanks for pointing out that I paid too much for my brackets! Just kidding. I saw a 74+ 911 today and I found out that the angled bracket does go on the front bumper. Thanks for everyone's inputs...
